Nobody is priced out..

Why do the crashers keep saying they are priced out of the housing market?

I took a quick look on a Maidstone property website this morning.

Loads of 2 bedroom decent flats for around 120K.

Granted, if you live in Central London it's a different story but most of the country is well affordable.

A young couple could easily save 20K in 1-2 years....100K mortgage nothing special to pay. Mine was that when I started and I managed it alone at high interest rates.

Think these renters ought to man up and just buy.

Find me a job where I could easily save £20k in 1-2 years, and live at the same time, whilst renting, and I'm sure they'll bite your arm off.

I'm not one of those priced out the market, but I only have nice house, nice car etc because I'm working round the clock, with considerable business risk to do so!

Yes and then back in the real world where people are paying £800 (or more) a month rent as they cant live with their parents, perhaps don't take home anywhere near £3 between them.........

    Changes things slightly

The kind of people who could save 20K in 1-2 years would not want to live in Maidstone.

Probably meant as a dig towards Sibley, but you touched on the heart of the matter.
The culture of "I'm entitled to the nicest house in the nicest area" and "I want it all and I want it now" has truly set in.
Most homeowners have started out small, or in a less desirable area and worked their way up.
It's probably too much effort for the current crop.

When we started out, we live on one wage and banked the second wage.

From the above, you'd need to save £10k nett per year, so the second salary would need to be circa £15k gross.

Are you a couple where the second salary household income is £15k+?

    Exactly that.

I get that not everyone is 'entitled' to have a chance to save up for a house. Those of us on lower salaries just can't, and OH and I have just made the decision that we're not going to get there and that rather than spending our lives trying to save for something we'll never afford, we'll find somewhere we'd want to rent for life.

Home ownership would be lovely, but it's not going to happen for us. It only frustrates me because paying the monthly mortgage wouldn't be an issue - it's only the deposit that stops it happening.

Maybe you should look into the help to buy scheme, starting 1 January 2014.

Disclaimer: Before any silly bear jumps on me for daring to suggest such a scheme, I just said they should "look into" it.

    Nothing special?

Having a 100k mortgage would terrify me.
