There are a couple of misconceptions in this thread...

    - The average fine for Licence Fee evasion is around £130 - historically it has been around the same amount as the Licence for quite a while.

    - The offence is committed by a person, and it is concerned with that person watching/recording TV broadcasts without a licence. So if you are not watching/recording TV broadcasts in a household where others might be, it is (at least in theory) not you that TVL will be interested in.

    - In the event that a TVL staff member (they are not "officers" or "inspectors") calls, they will start to talk with the first adult who answers the door - unless they already have a contact name, in which case they will probably ask to speak to them.

    - Anyone can decline to speak with TVL, and close the door. Unless you particularly want to see your housemates being questioned by TVL, this is probably the best approach, especially if it's unlikely that any offence is being committed.

    - Personally, and knowing that TVL staff can sometimes take liberties, I would ensure that if I answered the door to them, and they asked to speak to someone else by name, I would shut the door on TVL whilst the other person was coming. This (a) prevents TVL from inviting themselves in, and (b) allows the other person their full legal rights to decline TVL entry to the property and decline to speak with them, if they wish.

I noticed more letters and "we visited, but nobody was home" letters from the TV license people.

Will let you know how the scenario progresses..
