Faulty Sky+HD, do I have to accept a "reconditioned" replacement?

Provided that the reconditioned replacement is not older than 6 months, surely? (i.e. any replacement should be the same age or newer than the original).
Sky don't tell you how old the replacement box is, just that it is "reconditioned".
Does look very new, to be honest, but the outside appearance is nothing to go on with regard the internal mechanism of course.

It needs to be of the same quality/ spec, age is not really relevant. A reconditioned box is almost always going to be of a better quality than a faulty box ;)

You're also assuming the box you got in the first place was new - you wouldn't be able to tell....I certainly couldn't with mine - and given the warranty is the same I'm not actually bothered either...
The factory seals were still on the original box.

I sincerely doubt Sky would sell me anything other than a brand new box, as anything second hand would definitely be "not as described".

Anyway, thanks for all the help everyone, I guess I just have to hope for a reliable replacement.

I can't help feeling that, as the replacement has already failed and been repaired, that it is more likely to fail in the future. Just seems more of a gamble than a new box.
I'm probably being pessimistic but I fear it'll fail just as the original warranty expires.
I suppose my original box now goes on to somebody else...

    Oh well..

I really wouldn't see it that way. It is quite likely that the box had a hard drive in that failed and has simply been replaced, they are wont to do so either within days of being used for the first time, or they will last many years in my experience (IT techie for the last 18 years). I'd happily buy reconditioned goods in a lot of circumstances.

Technically its no different to them repairing your current box :P (and under SoGA they could do a repair instead of a replacement if it was less costly).

Although with recons, usually you find they've had extensive testing before being sent out - to make sure they're up to scratch.

Another pro in recons favour is with a repair, you could be waiting months potentially for them to identify fault, get and install parts etc. Where with recons the turnaround is quicker. You get a working box while they fix your old box before sending it to someone else as a recon unit.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I doubt they'd be able to take my box away for repair and leave me with no viewing equipment while I continue to pay a subscription to their services.

    UPDATE
I've just realised that they've replaced my 1tb Sky+HD with a 2tb box! As the 2tb box was only launched about four months ago, it certainly isn't any older than the box it replaced.

In addition, I've been informed by the official Sky Forum that these reconditioned boxes can be brand new items where the original factory seal was found to be broken or even a box for which the subscription was cancelled within the first 30 days.

So, I've ended up with a far better specification of box...

Quite a bit of the recording capacity is reserved for "On Demand". I expect Deano knew exactly what he meant....
