I see the S4 also uses GPS. Does anyone know if this means that it contains a pre-loaded database of speed cameras? If so, is this easily updateable and does it cost anything to download updates?

    Thanks in advance.

They both use GPS and come with a database already loaded. You can perform updates as often as you want but it costs £4.95 a month to subscribe.

I've got one of the S4s, works a treat, as an alternative to the £4.95 a month, you can pay £99.95 for 30 months up front.

Also, I think with a new unit you get 6 months subscription free if you sign up to direct debit at £4.95 a month.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the subscription is optional or compulsory? And would you recommend getting it?

I'd be carefull that these are not made illegal in the near future as they can detect laser signals as well as using GPS.

There is a system called INFORAD which is available in many places for around £80 which is a pure GPS system therefore will not be outlawed if the law is passed regarding speed camera detectors in the near future.

Does anyone know if the "laser" or "radar" detection can be turned off on these, so that you can only use them using the GPS?

I don't think the threat of the ban on Laser / Radar detectors is now as iminent as it was originally believed.

The legislation to do this was in the "Road Safety" bill (a possible misnomer). Sadly this bill didn't make it on to the statute books before all the MPs broke up to campaign for the elections.

BBC News - Bills that ran out of time

So even if Labour get re-elected with a similar majority there is still likely to be a 6 month repreave whilst they re-formulate the bill, and then try and push it through.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Subscription is compulsory on the Snooper range, the unit has to be registered and your bank details given, before you can download the neccesary camera site info. Dont think you can switch off the laser bit but if it becomes outlawed Snooper might just modify them as they will lose a lot of subscriptions otherwise. The basic unit doesnt detect radar, you can buy a plug in extra to detect radar, this being plug in can obviously be removed if outlawed. The legislation to outlaw them (laser and radar) has been postponed due to the forthcoming election and it is possible this may not happen at all.
