Can my daughter claim Jobseekers Allowance after foundation year?

UPDATED AT END OF THREAD

My daughter is in her last week of her Foundation level degree and is returning to start her full degree in September. One of her fellow students has spoken to her local Jobcentre and they have claimed that she can claim JSA. I didn't think students were eligible for any benefits between academic years... Can anyone clarify the rules please? Thank you.

  • No you cant as you are still on the course and will be returning to do another year, you could only claim if you have stopped the course for good and intend on working.

This might not be the case - it depends on if it is officially classed as the same course - a foundation degree is a qualification in its own right. If it is not the same course, then she will be able to claim JSA from the course end date until the new course starts.

Could you clarify whether she's done a foundation year (as you say in the thread title) or a foundation degree?

She should claim, and see whether she gets it or not.

That's odd, we claim every summer, and have always been accepted - that's 3 years we have done it for.

Maybe the fact we have a child changes things, just worth a mention.

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments. My daughter was told she couldn't get a place on the social work degree course until she did a foundation year first. She has now almost finished her foundation year but has now changed her mind about doing social work and has been accepted on the criminology degree course instead. It all seems a bit hit and miss. Some of her friends have been told they can claim JSA and others definitely not...

I think I'll advise her to put in a claim and see what happens. Nothing ventured, nothing gained :o

Is the degree 'something-or-other with foundation year' or is she finishing a complete course which was just the foundation year on its own?
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Hi, it was just a foundation year on its own which then would enable her to go on to do a degree. It was just because she didnt have the necessary grades at A level so needed this to qualify for entry onto a degree course.
