Cheap tablet recommendations

My Son wants an ipad for his birthday (they use them at school however he will be 6 so certainly not getting one!)
I am thinking of buying him a tablet (prob 7" as will be cheaper but the ipad size would be better)
His birthday is a few months away yet so I have plenty of time to find one. I was thinking the cheapest way would be to get a second hand one off ebay.
What brands are the best and are there any brands I should avoid?
My other option is to get a second hand 1st gen ipad. I have seen these for £150 but that would the very top end of my budget and mean he would only get that and nothing else. Also I have read that the 1st gen is not worth buying as the software can not be updated anymore?
I would rather not buy a kids one as unless some one tells me different I suspect the spec is not so high on these as the normal versions you could buy for the same money.
Any suggestions which route to take would be appreciated.
Many thanks

No personal experience, but I've seen others recommend this.0 -
My first choice is £180 Asus Fonepad.
Second choice £129 HP Slate 7/ £105 Sumvision Cyclone Voyager Tablet 8"
Sumvision is cheaper and spec looks better. But HP is a famous brand0 -
Dont forget 1st gen lack any cameras (so facetime \ skype isnt possible). Hardware limitations more evident with later ios versions (particularly multitasking).. I recently upgraded from Ipad 1 to the Ipad mini, so this is from personal experience..
see what apps they use, and if available for the kindle fire or samsung tabs - newer spec but android and possibly in that price range..iammumtoone wrote: »My Son wants an ipad for his birthday (they use them at school however he will be 6 so certainly not getting one!)

i hate marketing why are we so brainwashed to get an apple.
Look into an android like a nexus or a samsung. great as a tablet and great for the kids just not as marketed to be brainwashed to buy one. its a great buy.

+1 for the Versus Touchpad 7, although couldn't get Dungeon Village to work on it despite the Google store telling me it was compatible when I was logged in and hooked up. Got a refund for the app in the end.0

just got one of these, 9.2" screen, full play store access, very good value at £70 delivered:-

or 7" for around £45 from same seller
edit - looks like the smaller ones have sold out from that seller, but available from other amazon sellers......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Instead of automatically going for a lower-range new tablet, you should also look into second hand top-end tablets.
Older top-end tablets may still have better performance specs than a lot of these "budget" tablets. If music be the food of love, play on :beer:0
