I sent a second class parcel yesterday using a combination of first and second class large letter stamps (thanks RM surveys) and 11p to make up the difference.
No problems with sending it - they just postmarked the stamps at the till (that bit was new) and wrote 2nd class on the parcel. And off it went.
Done it loads of times and never had a problem with collection at the other end.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I'm amazed by the answers on this topic so far because my experience has been exactly the opposite.

I have sent large letters using multiple first class stamps and had them held at the sorting office for collection as multiple stamps were "only counted as one". I have also had to go and collect from the sorting office as "two first class stamps count as one".

As Royal Mail can charge the extra cost of the right stamp and another pound on top for "revenue protection" and have a monopoly they have an incentive to be difficult.

Goodness, I hope you made a fuss, that is so wrong and much as we all like to have a go at RM, they aren't usually quite that bad.

I had a small parcel arrive today first class at £3, with 6 x second class stamps on it.

I paid for this item on Sunday, it was posted yesterday and arrived today, so nothing wrong with that at all.

I must admit, I've only posted in the post box small and large letters with the single stamp on. I've never used a combination of stamps.

But it would be very handy when I've only got one small parcel, and would save the longer walk to the post office. I'm happy to risk not getting a POP for lower value items, so I'm going to get myself a larger stock of stamps.

  • You can use 2 first class stamps. You can even get a small discount, although only worth it if you send a fair amount of DVD's or something.

They sell old stamps bought before price increases, which are still valid.
