And it is five working days, so including the Bank Holiday, the grace days are until next thursday.0

Its not grey but some chinese whisper moments.
It used to be 100% guilty for failing to display. But with the online purchase you do get a grace period of 5 days as mentioned.
As usual there are BUTs, It needs to be taxed before the old one expires.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Although, if you go back even further to when most people bought it by post using cheques (remember those?) and the police had to phone DVLA to check their (paper) records, a "Tax applied for" disk in your window was usually good for a month or two :rotfl:0 -

The DVLA V11 (tax renewal reminder) states :
"You will have an extra five working days to display your old tax disc if you tax your vehicle online or by phone before 30 April 2013."
Personally,as previously mentioned, I would carry a copy of the email confirming that you had purchased your car tax in the car just in case. If you did get stopped by the Police the confirmation of purchase would flag up on their system anyway...

My tax ran out last bank holiday weekend. I applied late on Monday, got the disc on the Wed/Thu, so just 2 days and not the 5 days they indicated.0

If they apply online or by phone before it expires, they've got 5 days grace
Print out the confirmation in case they get stopped.
Just skimmed the thread OP.
But this post is spot on.
This is the only way you are allowed to drive a vehicle without a displayed road tax disc, other than trade plates or to or from a pre booked MOT.0 -
Closed's posts in this thread are correct, ignore that first response.
What I normally do is print out the confirmation email and stuff it between the dashboard and windscreen to avoid hassle if any nosy traffic warden happens to be passing.0 -
In addition to the above, one can apply for a new VED disc up to three weeks prior to the expiry date of the old one.No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0

A couple of years ago I drove around with an expired tax disc stuck to the windscreen for about five months. I didn't realise that I hadn't swapped it over until, by chance, I found the current disc while clearing out a kitchen drawer.0
