Sydney Cheap Flight for Spring 2014.

Hi, can anyone advise me please as to when will be the best time to book a direct flight from London to Sydney for spring next year? Are there any times when there are sales on? Also are there any companies other than British Airways and Qantas who fly direct. I'm booking it for my pensioner mother who doesn't wish to change flights.

Many thanks.

They are the main two, although Virgin may be direct via HKG.

QF go via Dubai now, which is a bit further than Singapore.

Changing planes at the same terminal wouldn't be that difficult.

If she wants to travel near the Easter Holidays, there may be too much demand for sales.

She should hopefully avoid Easter that year as she will go several weeks before and come back a week after but I cannot check the prices yet as Easter is 20th April.

    Hi There,

I've just come back from living in Sydney and my mum (68) used to come out every year on her own.

We preferred Emirates flight via Dubai (mainly because direct from glasgow) Dubai Airport is relatively painless. Very well signposted andbu could always request assistance. It means the flight is split 7hrs then around 15. Whereas the Asia stops are more half and half.

My mum went via Singapore with BA one year and they sent her to the wrong gate and she almost missed the connection and it put her off coming back!

Other airlines flying into SYdney with good reputation are Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Etihad. With Etihad ur stop off will be Abu Dahbi.

As far as when to book, as soon as they go on sale are usually the cheapest unless it was May/June which is off peak for Sydney.

    Hope this helps

Note that while these flights are technically direct they are not non-stop. I believe she will have to get off the plane during stop-over (and then back on shortly after).

You just beat me to it jpsartre,

No one does a direct flight to Australia from UK (yet!).

I am looking to book flights to Sydney for next march and Malaysia Airlines are coming up with the best price.

Your mother would transit in Kuala Lumpur International Airport and change planes, but her luggage would be checked right through to Sydney.

If she is flying from a regional airport, make sure you buy a through ticket, which means she can book her luggage to Sydney, but also, if there are any delays on the first flight and she misses the main flight, the airline will put her on to the next flight.

We travelled with Emirates to Kl recently, and found Dubai airport to be massive!!! It was quite a walk between gates and even at 1am was very busy.
  • If you're looking for a cheap flight, go China Southern. They're often the cheapest, and instead of BA / Qantas getting off the plane and back onto the same one, you get off of one plane and get on one a few gates away. Really simple.

Lorraine, I am now debating taking my family over there too for 3-4 weeks. I've not been for 20yrs. A few people we've spoken to have said that its now very expensive there. Is it any more expensive than the Uk. We would have to hire a car and also get some accommodation. I regularly use Travelodge here and was considering the same over there when not with family. We would except for the wedding mostly be Sydney or Blue Mountains based so any tips for places with teenagers would be great.

    Many Thanks.

It is, although by how much depends on what you are actually buying. Petrol is actually cheaper but eating out is a lot more expensive. As a rough guide I would say about a quarter to half as much again as you would expect to pay in the UK.

I'm currently looking for a hotel in Melbourne for December and Travelodge rooms are coming out at £100 and up per night.
