Any recommendations for cash safe-keeping in the home?

You can pick up a safe pretty cheap.0

A secure safe with home contents insurance that has cover for cash.
With a safe that only you have access to you're protected from a family member or friend taking your money from your "secret" can of beans or plug socket and if a break in does happen you'll have a police report that will allow you to claim against the insurance. Most home insurance policies cover a small amount of cash (I believe up to £2000).
The worst that can happen if you hide money somewhere insecure is it gets stolen and you have to swallow the loss, the worst that can happen if you have the money stored securely and covered by an insurance policy is you have to wait a few weeks to have the loss covered.0 -
Buy a cash box, leave it on the kitchen table with the key in it and put your cash in the kitchen drawer.0

I once hid £500 and it took me years to find it. A burglar would probably have found it more easily.
Reminds me of a biography I just ready of Alan Turing, arguably one of the greatest minds of the 20th century who was involved in breaking the Enigma codes during WW2 and was the father of modern computing (he also worked in lots of other areas).
During the war he couldn't get medals as the work was so secret so he was given a very large cash bonus. He was worried about banks so bought silver coins and hid them, unfortunately he never found it again !0 -
Not as secure as a safe but it can be hidden fairly easily in somewhere like an attic.

if you only keep a sensible amount of cash at home, then a safe is a waste of money.0

Probably the best suggestion I`ve seen.
Fireproof and as you say, hide it in the attic buried amongst the loft insulation.0 -
One of my uncles thought he was being very clever wrapping some cash in plastic bags and hiding it in his kitchen bin.
Until his wife (uncharacteristically for her) put the bins out.
On a serious note. A friend who is a prison officer and discusses these things with his 'clients' says the best thing you can do is leave ±£100 in your bedside table. The vast majority of burglaries are drug users looking for their next fix; they'll grab the £100 and be gone with no further damage.
I also know others who have bought safes recently. More to do with taxation than the Cypriot situation.0 -

Just remember to make sure that it's well supported if you put it between a couple of joists.
The box I have weighs a few KG when empty and this pushing down on plasterboard ceiling could possibly cause cracking after a while.0 -

The £29-99 one weighs 6kg (13 pounds), so it`s a good point you make.0
