Vent - Rude older woman on train

I commute twice a week (down to London and back) at peak times. I always reserve a seat and invariably (not being the originating stop on a busy journey) have to turf someone out of it. It's only their reaction that differs. Most are fine, recognising that they have gambled on someone not travelling at that time, but some are downright rude, and, on a couple of occasions, aggressive. I've also seen people hide the ticket above the seat denoting the reservation, claim that their ticket entitles them to that seat and there must have been a double booking and pretend to be foreign or deaf. Surprising how being able to sit down brings out the worst in people!
Exactly the same - almost word for word - as what my brother has experienced in the past.
Bl**dy Dr. Beeching! Were it not for him, and the shabby transport policies which came after, we'd now have a railway infrastructure that was affordable, accessible and the envy of Europe.0 -
It's simple.
If someone is sat in my reserved seat, they get asked politely to vacate the seat.
If they refuse/get narky, I walk away.....
.... I tend to walk back a few minutes later with the train manager behind me.I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -

I used to get the train to work every day at the same time as some of what seemed like the most obnoxious kids on the planet were going to college (note, I'm only 29 so not exactly an oldie myself). They would take up all the seats, chase each other up and down carriages which were full of people standing, fiddle loudly with mobiles, etc.
I remember one morning on a particularly full train the conductor came to the head of the carriage, took one look at the mayhem and got on his loud speaker thingy to say that "if any of the little hooligans currently terrorising his passengers didn't grow up and either sit down quietly or give their seats up to older passengers every single one of them would be removed at the next station and the next mobile phone which made a noise would be removed via the train window". A bit harsh maybe (although it didnt feel like it at the time), but he got a round of applauseI don't like chick flicks, I get grazed knuckles doing my own car repairs and I ride a massive cruiser motorbike. To many this makes me a bloke in disguise but to my husband this makes me perfect

You've never seen a reserved seat on a train? They're usually in the form of a ticket sticking in the slot on the top of the seat saying the stations between which the seat is reserved.
I am in the south east, we don't have the luxury of reserving seats on the cattle trucks we use.
I once travelled to the West Country by train and had to use Virgin trains, and almost sat in a reserved seat, but realised it was reserved, this was the only time i have seen reserved seats.
So not everyone has the luxury of travelling with a TOC that offers this service.0 -
i've had a similar experience to the OP - haggard old bint thinking that her ticket entitled her bag to a seat on a dead busy train. she tried to remonstrate with me sitting next to her for the first 20 minutes of the journey, digging her elbows in etc., anything to get me to move.
a swift 'fuck off' worked a treat.
"how very dare you - i've never been spoken to like that before"
"well you should get out more"
headphones in, music on, sat in peace for the next 45 minutes.helpful tips

The very very worst thing about public transport, IMO, is the stink of some people (fortunately, in my experience, not many). But my Dad was a bus driver and he had to deal with quite a few of them...)
One time I was on a bus, final stop, we all got up - and the woman in front of me, to get off, had such foul BO I actually reeled back from her - she clearly had not washed herself or her clothes recently - because the stench made me feel sick! Every time she moved waves of odour wafted back.
Utterly, utterly foul.
I was once on the underground when a guy got on. He pulled out a small brown paper bag and started eating whole garlic cloves one after another. Now, I love garlic in my food but the smell was unbelievable. I'm not sure if it was the hangover I was suffering on the day but I literally had to move carriage as the smell was making me feel sick.
I just don't understand some people.0 -
The best one I ever heard, a few weeks ago, on my daily commute home from Glasgow on the - as usual - packed train. The ( guard / conductor / whatever you call them these days ? ) came on the tannoy, gave the usual speil about "this train will be leaving in 3 minutes" etc. etc. Then he says "As this service is very crowded, please can you ensure all luggage is stored in the overhead racks or the spaces between the seats. Seats are reserved for human beings, not bags". Well, it made me smile after a long day at work :-)0
