You need to pay a deposit but you should get that back when you move out.
If you look on easyroommate or spareroom, gumtree or righmove you may find what you are looking for.
We rent a number of houses and flats 1/2 and 3 bedroom ( mostly to the student market)
Now with a one bedroom flat we look for a couple because its very expensive living on your own.
75% council tax ( single person working)
gas, electic, water, home phone and broadband, insurance, TV licence.
Then you need all the furniture to fill a flat £££££ bed, wardrobe, desk+chair, chest of drawers, sofa, table + chairs, fridge/freezer, washing machine, kettle, microwave, toaster, plates, cups, ETC
    Get the picture ?
Now if you look on ERM or Spareroom you live with 1/2/3 other people and hopefully find a furnished place with your own bedroom( possible ensuite) and shared lounge/kitchen.
You only have a tenancy and security for what 6/12 months so if after 1 year and buying all your own stuff what happens if the Landlord wants you out or you want to move elsewhere!
Hire a van and move all that stuff? look for another flat that is unfurnished ?
Moving from one flat to another also costs as you then have to redirect mail, sort out bills all over again, inform everyone you have moved, letting agents fees, etc
Take your time and think carefully about this.

Depending on your area, £100PW is perfectly reasonable for a 1 bed flat.

Am I the only person who likes studio flats? I have a little studio where I live (and work) and I love it. The main room is a decent size, so I have a double bed, a dining table and chairs, and an armchair corner for working in, plus a proper-sized kitchen and bathroom. I wouldn't rule out a studio, especially if you're used to student accommodation - the shared living space in house shares can be unusuable anyway depending on housemates.
  • There are some beautiful studios out there, I lived in a studio for a year when working in France, and although no bigger than 25 square metres, it was great. It had an en suite shower and a full kitchen.

If you can live with a small amount of space they're great.

TV Licence would be £29 a month for the first six months (then it reduces), they make sure you are 6 months in advance.

My internet with TalkTalk is about £16 a month, which includes the home phone and we have a TalkTalk TV box. It did cost for BT to install a line though.

Gas and electric - for one person using the heating and electrics moderately, I would expect bills of around £30 a month for each. Council tax is subject to a 25% discount, and most 1 bedroom flats will be Band A. In my area that's about £72 a month with the discount. There may also be water rates.

The problem I find, living in studios, is that you are sitting looking at your washing for 3 days at a time while it dries.... and can't cook veggies because the smell would get into all your clothes. Also, heating tends to be expensive/awful (usually old storage heaters). There's also, usually, only a shower room and the kitchen area is so small there's no room for a freezer and prep area is often only large enough to make a cheese sandwich OR a coffee.
