Advice Please Re Car Insurance Renewal

Options
Hi
I've been insured with budget this last year as part of which I have protected no claims (I have about 25 years no claims) Anyway this year I took the monumental step (for me it was anyway :) ) of making a claim after I collided with my own garden wall :( stupid, stupid.....
So Budget said it wouldn't affect my renewal by more than a few ££ - actually £20 when I got the quote - but now I'm wondering if I can still shop around.
Do I still have "no claims" as far as other insurers are concerned? Don't want to be guilty of fraud but do want best possible price.
Please give me your advice insurance runs out on 23rd of this month!

Yes you can still shop around but you will have to declare that you have had a claim.

We were in same situation last year. I made a fault claim on the policy that hubby protects his NCB on. I shopped around at renewal but had to declare the fault. We actually got insurance cheaper after the claim :D

What relevance has a US Insurance company to this ? However I note your putting the same link everywhere so I guess its spam !

The answer is a simple NO.

Not any more you don't I'm afraid.

As far as I'm aware when you protect your no-claims it's only "protected" with the company you're with. It's meaningless to another company. I think I'm right in saying that when you switch, no insurer's forms ask whether you have a protected no claims. They ask if you've made a claim in the last five years. In my view "protecting your no claims" is yet another scam to attempt to stop you switching. Once you've made a claim you've made a claim and that's the end of your good record.

I HAD 33 years without ever making a claim until this year, now I have to answer yes to "have you made a claim in the last five years - and it hurts like hell.

nanana, I'm sorry, but you are wrong.

Protected no claims is an industry standard, accepted by all insurance companies.

However, it doesn't mean your price won't go up. There is no protection from that.

Hi brazilianwax - I stand corrected on the protected no claims bit but not on the spirit of what I said. I stand by my answer of NO to the question "Do I still have "no claims" as far as other insurers are concerned?" ksh123 will still be asked if s/he has made a claim in the last 3/5 years and the truthfull non-fraudulent answer is YES.

Actually you could shop around as some companies ask only for the last three years.Don't forget your cashback from here...............
Have a look at at http://www.quidco.com/finance/most-popular/3/
e car insurance as they gave me a very good quote or this one and £40 cashback.
    http://www.expressinsurance.co.uk/
    Again a very good quote.
Clear your cookies if you use them.

I guess you could also try Martin's insurance information guide.Takes about 15minutes and work on the cheapest ones. Then see if you are offered cashback on Quidco with them.Remember there are other insurance companies available.Never let the time taken be an option to stop searching.
if you earn £10 an hour before tax(so really around £6.50)and you can make a saving of say £100 over three hours split over three days say,you would have had to work around 15 hours to have made that money.

I would never stay more than a year with the same company unless I can go on as a new customer after I have examined the market. With huge cashback incentives on offer, you would be prudent to change companies.Always get a quote 28 before renewal as some companies will phone or email you to improve their quotes, without reducing your cover or messing with your excess.Remember you will loose your cashbcak if you accept the phone quote though.

I know brazilianwax has already corrected you but i just wanted to add my 2p worth :D

You are right to say that even if you protect your no claims discount, in the event of a claim you have to declare that claim. BUT as you have protected it you don't lose any of the yrs entitlement. You only lose Xyrs entitlement if you make something like 3 claims in 5 yrs. (these figures vary from co to co)
For example....hubby has full NCD which he protects. I had a 100% fault claim on the policy after a run in with a gate post. At renewal I shopped around and declared the claim to every co I called. I still said I had full NCD which is protected but had made a claim. You take the protection with you even if you switch. Every co offers this. And, I got insurance cheaper this year with the claim over last year without it.

If I were you and had 33 yrs claim free I'd have protected it. Even tho most co's only go up to something like 7 yrs.
Also I would like to say that I know you were trying to help but its best if you are sure of what you are saying before saying it.
