Has anyone bought from National Coal?

OK. I suppose as I started the topic, I might be allowed to drift it sideways a bit and take you up on that?
In the past on this forum the suggestion has been made that Newflame is 'high in sulphur' and has been implicated in premature failure of stainless steel liners.
I put this question directly to the Solid Fuel Association a couple of years ago and was told it 'conformed to the relevant standards' or suchlike.
That doesn't actually answer the question, of course, and it has to be said that Newflame does give off a particularly sulphury smell.
As I am about to buy a metric tonne of the stuff and don't want to replace an expensive liner prematurely, can you throw any light on this, please?
Hi,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
Newflame and other smokeless briquettes are usually blamed by liner manufacturers for the failure of their products. Some even go as far as saying you should only burn "halogen free fuels". Everything has halogen in it, logs, coal... everything!
I don't think Newflame or any other HETAS approved smokeless briquettes have anything in them that will outwardly cause premature failure of liners. My only advice is to keep the guarentee of your liner, usually 10-25 years, in the event of a problem. Sometimes the liners are cheap and not up for the job I'm afraid, the best type to go for is a 904L stainless steel liner as far as I believe.
Newflame is a good product, superior to most of the budget ovoids on the market.
Again, sorry for the delay :j0 -

Hi,
Just for the record - I had a great experience with this company. First when I called them - they wanted to know what I was burning solid fuel on, and what solid fuel I was currently using. They were able to give me advice both on the appliance (Rayburn) and advised me on the pros and cons of the ovoids I was currently using. Pretty impartial advice I thought.
The bloke then went on to describe the best fuels for my stove and I arranged to try out the one he advised - the cheapest as it happens. An anthracite/coke mix. It was great (much better than what I was using) - so I ordered 4 tonnes.
It arrived the other day on wrapped pallets. There was a lot of it - but absolutely manageable.
So on balance - id say that its a good company with some real experience behind it - offering good money saving advice and delivering on time and on budget.
Ill be using them again.
And that's the problem with sites like this - generally they only carry bad news. So, there you have it, a little bit of good news!! Well done National Coal...

Out of interest, what was the name of the fuel you are now using?
Many thanks
