Skiing in the Alps

My daughter has been given the opportunity to go skiing in the French Alps, which would be an amazing experience for her, however I am quite nervous at the prospect of her going.

I know she will get a lot out of it and for a week, including flights, transfers, meals and tuition, it is only gong to cost £250, so a fantastic saving which I would not be able to replicate.

I guess, I would like to hear of anyone else's experiences of this sort of trip, or what their children experienced by going.

Daughter will be 15 by the time they go on the trip and can ski very well on dry slopes - she hasn't any experience of skiing on snow, although we can access that before she went if necessary.

Thanks :)

  • I went in a skiing trip with school at that age, in fact it was my 15th birthday whilst we were there and I got a yummy cake in the shape of a rabbit! :D

It was an amazing experience and I loved it! They asses your skills on the first day and you are split into groups of about 8. You are then taken by a ski instructor and gradually build on your skills. You stay on easy slopes and are never pushed too far or fast!

We had a session in the morning and another in the afternoon.

I would recommend she goes, it was a great experience and allowed me to feel independent whilst being completely safe.

My daughter went skiing with school at easter in Switzerland. They went by coach and the cost of the trip was £870, why is your trip so cheap ?

My daughter didn't enjoy the trip at all, she's 12. She's not the clingy sort so i didn't worry about her being away from me. She's not a natural skiier and had had some lessons on the dry slopes and still found it difficult on snow. She has said that she wouldn't want to go back. The week before my daughter went, a 9 year old girl died falling from a ski lift and another young boy died after being hit by another skiier, it did make me think about her safety, but you just have to push it to the back of your mind, there is danger everywhere.

However, all kids are different, my son went when he was 13 and loved every minute !

    Why are you nervous ?

Are you sure that's the cost? It's very very very cheap.

Why are you nervous of her going? What worries you? Is it the actually skiing, or the being away from home?

Let her go, she'll love it!
My son went with his school and had a great time, in fact he loves it so much he moved to Switzerland with his wife a couple of years ago :)
Don't hold her back, let her free, her confidence with be so high when she gets back.

What is worrying you? IMO as a mother you need to give your child the confidence to do things in life, so smile and say you will have a great time.

One of my children went skiing for the first time with school and ended up from the age od 21 to 27 working as a ski technician every winter so he could snowboard all winter and as a fully trained white water raft guide all summer.

This gave home great life experience, he supported himself, lived in many different countries and has got the wanderlust out of his system.

Let you child grab life with both hands not worry about what is round every corner!

just wanted to add that £250 does sound very cheap! It used to cost about £600 for a school skiing trip, and that was many years ago!

The cost is so cheap because a grant has been secured from the National Lottery in order for 10 children to go.

My daughter really wants to go, even more so because a few of her friends have also been picked for this trip.

The situations where children have died makes me nervous, plus with skiing, there is the potential for accidents and if she were to get hurt, so far from home, I worry.

She does have a lot of freedom - going away for weekends lots of concerts - next one is the slam dunk festival, it's just that it is so far from home.

The positives are that it is an amazing experience, negatives are my worries over it.

    Thanks for replies :)

That sounds the same sort of set up, WG.

They have 4 hours tuition for the 6 days, split into two sessions.

I have to ask, what is the point in her having skiing lessons if you're not going to let her actually go skiing when such a fantastic opportunity arises?

Definitely let her go - it sounds a great opportunity, very cheap for a week's ski-ing, and I'm sure she'll love it.
