PC won't switch on after a full scan

Last night I left the PC running a full scan on Microsoft essential. By time I went to bed it had been working thru the scan for 3 1/2 hours so I went to bed and left it scanning.
I did the scan because it wasn't Up to date a as the PC has been unused for about 2 weeks whilst I was trying to fix a different fault -(it was in power save mode and it was a faulty agp slot).
I made a note that this morning my next job is to sort out why is there so much on the PC that it takes 3 1/2 hrs to scan. I have the same PC and the scan takes 10-15 mins at most. But this is grandmas machine I'm trying to fix and of course the grandkids play games and have programmes on there. So that is my next job - but can wait.
Back to the point of the post.
This morning I go back to it thinking I'll find its completed its scan.
But its completely dead this morning!!
There is electricity going to it and it was scanning last night but now there's no lights on and it won't switch on at all even tho there's power to it and to the rest of the house.
So how can you identify which component is causing this fault and how do you fix a PC that won't switch on? Thanks a lot for any help.

Info dump needed:- PC make and model then:- unplug pc press and hold power on button for 10secs, replug in, power on. Any fans, beeps, lights?
If nothing try a different kettle lead (for starters) then need to take the lid off...0 -

See section "Controls and Lights". Does the PC do anything?0 -
Check the fuse - try an alternative "kettle lead" - if you have one
Is there a switch on the rear of the PC that could have been knocked off ?0 -

Thanks for the ideas as it can be basic things like that but I had checked and changed cables etc. it's working now that I've done the 10 second info dump thing

Sorry, that's my bad English. The "info dump" was my request for information.lonestarfan wrote: »So next Qu has to be why would it do that and what is an info dump?
EDIT: and why it happened? Power Supply/motherboard glitch? Make sure your data is backed up.0 -

I thought that was what you meant which was why I posted its a Dell but afterwards I wasn't sure!
You sent me the manual a few days ago when I posted a different fault so I expected you to remember me and that it was a dell - lol
Thanks anyway.
I'm going to do a bit of work on the Internet now the machine is up and running and will sort out a back up and tomorrow will start on looking at what's on there and how I can get stuff off it to make it scan in less time. It scanned 1734264 items which sounds rather a lot! ?0 -
I am wondering if it either overheated as it was flogging the CPU for hours so running it hot and the processor thermal protection kicked in and shut it down. Perhaps the heatsink and fans need a hoover out.
Or if it just tried to reboot automatically after installing updates and just failed and shutdown instead.
Or some power management settings are set to shutdown after so many hours. (ie put the computer to sleep mode)0
