think you need to run ccleaner on there will clear out alot of your junk which alot of people don't bother with click lick below is free to use
when installed click analyze button when done on bottom right click run cleaner.

question have you got any anti-malware software on there at all? if not i suspect where your problems lie to much buried stuff slows machines down hell of alot so people can see what you are doing especially kids visiting sites for free games pick up alot of malware that can't been seen by anyone.
anyway click link below download it then update definitions then run full scan and clean afterwards should be like hell of alot faster be my bet!

    free as well.

let me know how you get on.

Thanks Basil as you've saved me a post and a lot of googling. I was going to post first thing in the morning and say ok where do I start.
So now I have tomorrow mornings task all lined up because of course I have nothing else to do except fix computers or buy computers for grandma and nephews lol.
I'll post after I've done what you say. Will be so pleased if I do improve it as its been on my list for a long time to give it a spring clean :)

    Cleaner analysis removed 4300 MB
Malwarebytes found 6 - took 3 1/2 hrs to scan! Scanned 543669 items.
Out of the 6 only 2 were checked and I didn't know whether I was supposed to check the box of the other 4.
The 2 it removed were riskware tool (Nero) and Trojan.startPa - which was c:\users\pamela\appdata\roamong\FBDow.....
    The 4 I didn't remove we're
    Pup.datamngr Registry Key
Should I do the scan again and remove those 4?

I thought pup.datamngr was an animals game the kids were playing as they do play animal zoo type of games etc. but by chance I came across the acronym today and think its pop up programme lol.
So should I remove those 4?

Did this thank you. Ran a quick scan again of malware bytes and it just identified the pupdatamngr items again.
    Should I delete them?
Did a full scan on Microsoft essentials. Still took 4 1/2 hrs but this time it did 1563081 items so that's a reduction from the 1734624 items before

also after deleted 4 of them goto ccleaner there is registry tab click on that then at bottom scan for issues button then afterwards fix selected issues will help tidy registry up as well this will slow machine down if registry is all over the place.
