from a recruiting point of view.

Vacancy closes - short-list week later - didn't make the shortlist - system generated e-mail straight away.

Interviews - successful candidate call and give a "conditional" verbal offer.

Unsuccessful - call personally and offer feedback, it's only good manners.

Then the people I feel sorry for - hold the next two highest scorers just in case pre-employment checks don't work out - this can take up to 8 weeks!! - these are the limbo people

If I was one of the limbo people, after 8 weeks I'd have found another job...

Yes me too, but it's slightly less cruel than calling and saying we are keeping you in reserve just in case our preferred candidate doesn't work out. That's like Limbo extreme.

No its not. I would much rather be told I am on a waiting list than being ignored. People aren't naive to think there aren't just as capable people applying for the same jobs.

I would say I have only ever had an email back from applications possibly 5% of the time - no more.

Even ones I chase or ask if there was any feedback hardly reply.

Not a company's responsibility to tell you why you weren't successful.

how awful - feel sad to read these comments. it is so rude not to even let people know - especially if they have taken the time to come and meet you for an interview!!

i am lucky as have only ever applied for 3 jobs and this was when there was no shortage - therefore found out within 24 hours of the interview.

this thread scares me as i am considering leaving my current employer... being thrown on the scrap heap would finish me off :(

Doesn't always work like that. Had countless interviews and no-one has ever called me personally to offer feedback, most of the time didn't even get a rejection letter. Also I don't get why an employer would make you wait 8 weeks if you were the 2nd or 3rd choice candidate to reject you. As a candidate I would just want an immediate rejection saying you haven't got the job. If it didn't work out with 1st candidate, whats wrong with employer then offering you the role, so what if they had previously sent you a rejection letter?

Maybe not, but it is good manners.
