Rentals in Brighton area

We are planning to move over from Spain and looking at affordable rental options for a family of 4 in and around the Brighton, Lewes, Shoreham areas for a minimum 1 year whilst my daughter is at Uni there. Prices seem to be on a par with London though which are way over our budget so wondered if any members knew of nice areas with affordable 3 bedroom rental properties under 1000 GBP per month? Would even consider a static caravan park if they allow long stays!

Yes, Brighton is very expensive, partly because it's very easy to get to central London from here. How old is your other child, and where are you working? For a professional couple with a car there are lots of towns in mid sussex that are worth considering, including Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath etc that have direct trains to London. They might be a bit quiet for a student-age daughter though - would you be better if she lived in student halls/houseshare, and you got a smaller house for the other three of you?
Note: Unless otherwise stated, my property related posts refer to England & Wales. Please make sure you state if you are discussing Scotland or elsewhere as laws differ.

We lived in Portslade when working in Brighton. Easy access and about 3/4 of the price so rentals should be cheaper.
  • I did a RM search within 10 miles of Brighton and quite a lot of properties came up. How about:

Thanks for your replies! Our son is 13, I work from home and my wife will hopefully be working in Brighton so we prefer to be somehwere within 15-20 minutes drive of the Falmer campus. My daughter is a home girl so doesn't fancy the student halls/houseshare option just yet so any helpful advice appreciated!

Moulsecoomb is the 'rough' area of Brighton, as are Whitehawk, Bevendean, and Coldean which are close by.

Ok are there any 'nice' areas in or around Brighton that fall within our budget of 1000 GBP per month?
  • Patcham is nice, not sure about the rental prices though. It's got a very 'village/community' feel to it. There's a local high school, easy access into the town centre there are 3 or 4 bus routes and it's about 2miles from the uni. Hope that helps.
  • By the way, I may be a bit biased as I live there!

Yes, I know but as we're talking renting a 3 bed for £1000 PCM that may be the reality of the situation.

OP would need to look at the street in question and immediate vicinity to know whether it was fit for their purpose.

Will check Patcham, would Lewes or Shoreham be within our budget?
