Dorset days out ideas from Weymouth

Hi staying at Weymouth for a week in the summer and looking for days out from there for a couple with a car. We like scenery, gardens, castles that sort of thing. Any ideas most welcome. We have some ideas but just asking before compile an itinerary. Thank you.

Corfe Castle is beautiful, as the previous poster said. I have a stunning framed photograph of the castle from a shop in Corfe village. Lulworth Castle is pretty too and Lulworth Cove (my picture!) is truly beautiful with lots of cliff walks - you can easily walk to Durdle Door from there.

In the Weymouth area, for gardens, try the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens. If the weather is rough, go to Portland Bill - the crash of the sea against the rocks is spectacular.

I'd recommend exploring the Tyneham area for lovely walks and great scenery. Tyneham is a ghost village that the Ministry of Defence took over during WW2 - when the range is open you can walk down to Worbarrow Bay, which is lovely. There's also an amazing viewpoint called Whiteways on the ridge above Tyneham where on a clear day you can see from Portland right across to Poole Harbour. Poole is worth a shot actually - lots of pretty boats and you could try Brownsea Island.

Just a few quick thoughts. My family moved to the Dorchester area a couple of years ago and we've been busy exploring. :)

    Bovington Tank Museum

And don't forget to try some of the once 'extinct' Dorset Blue Vinney cheese.

Exbury Gardens is a beautiful place. I totally agree with the poster who suggested exploring Tyneham.

Guernsey is worth a day out. Foot passenger fares are reasonable and it has a good bus service.
  • Broadchurch ! West Bay location for it anyway

True, but AFAIK the catamaran ferries don't use Weymouth at the moment, as the quay collapsed!

The Bovington Tank Museum was great fun! We watched a fascinating tank display there. If that's your style, you might venture a little bit further afield to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum near Portsmouth Harbour - loved the HMS Alliance tour.

If the weather's good, you might enjoy a boat trip down the river at Wareham and there's a pub by the river to have lunch at afterward. Think it's called the Granary. There are a few operators who do boat trips along the Jurassic coast as well. We often see the boats from Lulworth Cove.
