To be fair to Hastings, Insurance isn't really their strong point.

Their current emphasis seems to be damage limitation when they find their name mentioned anywhere in public, and to be fair, they do seem to be good at that, and from the above it seems their monitors don't just scrutinise MSE, but are patrolling the web!

Shame people don't do their homework here online before taking out a Hastings policy in the first place (lots of "don't touch them type threads), rather than coming here after any service is needed!

Their google alerts must spew out dozens of pages a day, can't imagine many being complimentary.

Jamie must be so proud working for such a company although as they say "Where there's muck there's brass"

Thank you for your response. I am still at a total loss as to why my daughter should be out of pocket through no fault of her own.
She now has no car and now they are telling her she owes them an additional £80 rather than them paying her!
Absolutely disgraceful. She is having to reclaim the car hire back through another company, so my question is - what are Hastings actually doing for their money. Absolutely nothing.
Surely this is illegal? I think I`m going to the press to highlight how rubbish Hastings is so that no more innocent people, who religiously pay car insurance, are not conned by their insurance.

You have purchased a policy which will pay out, subject to an excess. In the case of a total loss (write off), the cost of the (annual) policy will also be reduced as there is no longer a vehicle to cover.

Once you have paid for the policy, and the excess, you will receive any payment for the vehicle. You need to pursue your uninsured losses yourself, via legal cover if you have it.

If you were to claim through the third party insurer, your own insurer would usually allow you to transfer your policy to a new car to avoid any issues with refunds. Alternatively, as you hadn't made a claim with them, you would be able to get a pro-rata refund (I would imagine not possible now as they have paid out hire car costs).

Unfortunately, it is not just Hastings who are like this, it's just how insurance works.

All of this is normal, nothing unique to Hastings.
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

In the past when we have claimed and not been our fault - been paid out in full. Nothing like Hastings at all. You get what you pay for - basically you get absolutely nothing from HASTINGS DIRECT. Be warned - their cover is not worth the paper its written on. A formal complaint is going in as we speak. Each call handler gave different information. At no point was their processes explained. Call handlers could not answer our questions/scenario`s.
    Communications absolute appalling.
the whole process - absolute nightmare - only people winning are - yes you guessed it HASTING DIRECT!
No wonder there are so many uninsured drivers! The innocent get penalised.

That may bit a joke, but you're right. I think they don't even understand the market, when they're offering telematics boxes. The people who are most likely to be drawn to telematics devices are those aged 18 - 25.

This age group is the most likely of all age groups to go to university, which means moving to another place

But of course, Hastings can't seem to get their head around that at all. Why offer a telematics device, if you don't even understand the market?
  • Hi

I've only just joined the forum after researching Hastings Direct following a similar incident as mentioned above, which i will share when the claim has completed... if ever.

Previously i selected insurance with Admiral and after my car was written off (car was parked up so i was not involved in the accident when a fellow driver lost control in the snow and caused sever damage). I had a great experience with them after i informed them of the incident that was not my fault as was not involved at all... Admiral processed the claim- claiming off the drivers at fault insurance and i was offered a settlement after 2 days- received the settlement cheque 2 days after and my no claims was not affected.

From my understanding this is how it should work. When i received the settlement Admiral transferred my insurance onto another vehicle free of charge.

I now have a pending claim with Hastings and am having a nightmare, but will inform the forum when i have further coresspondence.

    Would highly recommend Admiral.

I am the official company representative of Hastings Direct. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"

Used them for 2 years now as they were the cheapest, but luckily haven't had to contact them for any reason.

My insurance is up for renewal in October. Now that I'm a bit older and have some no claims under my belt I could probably pick an insurer with decent reviews rather than settling for the cheapest.
