Unfortunately you're learning the life lessons of cost of things.

If £19 is fine a month with decent internet use, that will be the better option if you are unable to take out a 12 month phone contract and thus get monthly, or 12 month internet contracts. So internet and line rental costs, as well as any call costs on top.

A dongle will not be able to take up the usage of a typical uni grad. It will cope with emails, job searching/cv sending, it'll allow a few videos browsed on youtube, and little picture site viewings etc. But you wont be able to heavily stream video from catch up regularly and hours spent watching amusing fail videos (for example!)

You could get a mifi (circa £70 one off payment) unit to give you a wifi hotspot where ever you wish to be (and have an appropriate signal) and something like 3 mobile will sell you a 10gb sim for £15 a month, rolling contract. But 10gb will not get you a lot of internet entertainment for what I'm thinking you'd use. Whilst you've not said what, you're not gunna just do email, and text chat over skype for example :D

You're not doing Media Studies, are you? Otherwise, are you sure that you'll have all this spare time to watch TV and play with the internet, rather than studying?

You do have a better choice when you can get your own line/virgin/etc but most are a minimum 12 months contract, so if you're planning on being in there for at least that time it might be worth it. BUT Broadband over the line means you need line rental costs on top, but get all in one packages. I'd recommend a look at plusnet, if you can LLU with them very cheaply (if in right areas) or virgin to get a larger package, tv, internet, etc. With plusnet you could pay line rental up front at a discount, but it's still 12 months worth.

Look don't worry about it, find your future home for now, then come back when you've decided and see about options. There can be sweeteners for joining places as you're a new customer.
