hi there Meridiana cancelled a flight from Gatwick to Florence exactly one month before departure date next month. My colleague has now had to rebook with another airline at a much higher cost and incurring extra costs in accommodation etc. Has he any rights to any compensation? I understand they have just stopped operating this route. thanks for any advice.

thanks. I may be misunderstanding the terminology in points b and c above but when it refers to "final destination" is it only referring to people who are stranded abroad rather than those who have not yet started their trip as in my colleague's case?0

Has he already accepted the refund and rebooked?0

yes he has - with Vueling from Heathrow. we discussed it last week and I said I thought there was some legislation whereby he would be able to request re-routing rather than a refund but his email requested him to call their help centre in italy so he was going to do that that evening and have only seen him again today. We thought with it being exactly a month before departure date then this was probably within the accepted period of time for cancellation without re-routing I'm kicking myself that I didn't come on here at the time but we thought Airitalia might offer another option when he rang them.0

The same has just happened to me: we're due to fly to Florence with Meridiana on July 26th and they cancelled our flights yesterday. I tried phoning the helpline but no-one spoke English and they hung up on me. I then rang a UK number and was told I could have refund (as they no longer fly to Florence) which I accepted but booking new flights today we found that the fares have doubled. Are we with within our rights to demand compensation for the extra flight costs?0
