Rev, I know it's hideously expensive, I fed my last spaniel on it, hence my question :). She'd been fed on Dr John's Silver and just picked at it, and was in very poor condition but still overweight. As soon as I swapped onto the Orijen her condition improved amazingly in a very short space of time. She used to eat it the way a spaniel should eat food :)

We are being home checked today with a view to rehoming another spaniel, so I was interested in what gettingready 's experience was, as I know she swapped away from it.
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!

Just swapped from Autarky Chicken to Skinners Salmon.

Pooch was fine on the Autarky until this most recent bag when he started to get really itchy and dandruffy. I contacted my supplier to sort out changing his food and she told me that her dog who was also on Autarky Chicken had suddenly started with itching and dandruff too.

I don't know if the ingredients have changed or anything but that is 3 people I know of now who have had the sudden itching problem.

The Autarky Salmon may be different though. The Skinners I have switched to costs the same as the Autarky so thought it made sense.

I did find that Autarky helped with weight-loss though, and pooch didn't seem hungry on it either.

Hi, I'm currently feeding my dog the senior light version of autarky, she is a lab x husky and has some weight to lose, and moving her on to this food she has lost weight but still eats enough to keep her satisfied, when we tried cutting her normal food down she was raiding the bins in my kitchen etc so we looked into a light food we could afford, and after quite a while researching on various forums I came across autarky, she has been on it a while now and is doing well on it, I think the salmon one is best in terms of ingredients but I feed her both we usually get a bag of salmon, then a bag of chicken flavour to keep it interesting for her :)

    HTH :)

I've been feeding my dog on Autarky chicken without any problems at all. As he needed to lose a bit of weight, the vet advised me to bulk out his food with carrots (either raw or cooked. I cooked them as my dog won't eat them raw). Just reduce dog food by one third and top up with carrots. It worked for mine, so may be worth a try?

Thanks for all the replies - could only afford 1 bag this month and light was almost 27 and regular 22 so... had to get the regular. On special offer (2 bags) they are both under 40 for 2 bags but individually not so...

    Will see next month.

Moomin5 - my Mum feeds her Labrador Autarky Chicken. She tried the salmon one but the dog lost a fair amount of weight. She is in much better condition on the chicken one. I have suggested Skinners to her because of the lower maize content.

I feed Skinners ....I find that my 3 labs don't guzzle it down so quickly, and they all look brilliant - bright shiny black coats.

They aren't forever looking for more food, either!

Skinners Salmon & Rice doesn't have any Maize in it ...... if you're looking at Skinners Chicken & Rice, it's worth noting that the Field & Trial Salmon & Rice, Turkey & Rice and Duck & Rice are the only hypoallergenic ones in their range and have far superior ingredients than the other varieties they do.

There is a huge amount of ingredients in the Autarky range for some reason ..... I've noticed there's Tomato in the Salmon one (not looked at others as Maisie can only have fish kibble) which can be a trigger for sensitive tummies (IBD / Colitis etc)
