  • Wait a sec, I didn't realise they actually said its because your female......complete idiots if they did. I thought you presumed that rather than the seniority.

Unfortunately though it doesn't change to much unless you can prove that its because you are female.

That changes it slightly. I still think they will go down the least senior route but if you are not happy and you feel its discriminatory due to sex then it maybe worth talking to a solicitor.

But be aware if you do go down this route that will be the end of the relationship with the employer.

Well, yeah I wouldnt ever think that they'd want to speak to me again, let alone employ me!

Its a tough one, I know, I just don't want to sit there and take that sort of discrimination and keep quiet about it but I feel awkward about discussing it further because I may just be shot down again.

Sounds rather sexist to me. Any office I've worked in (both as junior and senior) the tea/coffee was made by whomever had a gap in their, wanted a cheeky five minutes away from their desk or was first to want another cuppa.

I'd start taking a bottle of water to work for a week and see if anyone steps in to make the tea.

They definitely said it was because I'm female, I thought I'd heard wrong but, no... It was said on more than one occasion during that conversation, by more than one person!

If you contract says that the company can get you to do any other reasonable task they see fit it can include making tea when ever they chose to get you to make it.

However if they have said its cause you are female they may not be able to do that legally

That's exactly how its worked in companies I've worked for in the past, everyone mucks in no matter what their title, so long as they have the time. Even in massive companies where the work load is much greater.

You are employed as an administrator, not to make tea. If someone wants to change your contract of employment, they need to give you 90 days written notice to do so.

I dont think theres anything lighthearted about this at all to be honest and yes Ive worked in offices where people took it in turns to make tea.

Theres bullying undertones in all of this as far as Im concerned. Really not nice, why should people have to put up with being ordered around, not part of their job description just to keep a job.

If the other people in the office are capable of making tea or coffee, it should be shared and shame on that director for saying it would go in your job description if you wouldnt do it.

I would say tea making is not your job no matter what your rank, and it is unfair and unreasonable and as your the only female I would say it is sexist.

Also if the director does write it in your contract don't you have to agree to it and if you don't would he sack you?
    Bad luck breeds bad luck.

    Damn I'm doomed.
