You are they eBay legal interpretor? It says they discourage it, that's not the same as being prohibited.
As I said, I relist-no fee avoidance there. In fact they often get more fees from me.

I just copied and pasted what it says on ebay itself and on ebay it states prohibited.
Ending a listing because your not getting enough money for your item is the same as a reserve price not being met.
Just because the reserve price is one that is in your head as opposed to being set on your listing doesnt change the intention.
  • I've pulled items before with bids because I've noticed a fault that i hadn't seen before, i would rather cancel than get an angry buyer.

    It says
We strongly discourage sellers from ending a listing early
    Copied from eBay.

As far as I am concerned a reserve fee is something I pay to add in secret to the listing- I never do this.
  • Twice in the last couple of months I've been watching Ebay items with a view to bid........and the seller suddenly ends the auction with a couple of days to go.

Both items were pick up only, and the last one even had a bid on it.

It's pretty obvious that the sellers must have had offers they couldn't refuse and sold the items 'off' Ebay.

Just a rant really, but I only hope (not) that they got more than I was willing to pay. :(

I was selling a camper and the first person who won it couldn't pick it up so reneged on the deal; and so I did a second chance offer...he was already bidding on a different camper. When that fell through he contacted us and said he wanted it after all so I sold it to him.

A bird in the hand and all that.

    As a seller
I never put a reserve price. I always start my auctions at the lowest amount I would be willing to accept for my items and if no bids received for that amount then I would rather keep the item/s. I never end my auctions early. I put all that information at the end of each of my auctions and if anyone contacts me I state the same information.

    As a buyer
If I see something I really want I will contact sellers and ask them if they have a buy it now price to end a listing early. I got so fed up of listings I was interested in 'disappearing' and when I did contact a couple of sellers it was because they had been asked for BIN prices to pull the listing - so when buying on eBay I figured if you can't beat 'em, join em'.

    All is fair in business.

Am reminded when I turned down a BIN offer of £180 for an item I was selling, opting instead to let the bid run its course, foolishly thinking I could get a better offer. The bid ran its course and as a result of letting it, the item sold for £125, meaning I came out worse off from the original offer.

I would not make that mistake again, I set myself a price limit on the hope the item is sold at that price or more, if someone makes me an offer of the price I have in mind, I am more likely going to accept it.

That same thing happened to me, only I was the buyer doing the offering. A seller was selling two items that went together (a matching bracelet and ring) and I wanted both but didn't want to wait the 9 days till the auction ended. I offered a combined price for both items, buy it now. They declined and I upped my offer by 50 pounds and explained that I was a regular buyer of said item and the price I offered was more than they would get at auction to secure the sale for me. They declined, saying they would get more at auction. I watched the auctions closely and they ended 60 pounds less than I had offered at buy it now. I sent an email on closure saying I was sorry that they had refused my offer and then the items sold for a lot less. Seller greed, it cost them 60 pounds. If a buyer offers a good amount, sellers should take it! but a lot get greedy.

Can you pull a listing even if it has bids on it?

Yes! A seller had a vintage barbour trench (a business) up with about a dozen bids and it was at 34.00. I offered him 80 pounds buy it now to cancel all bids and sell to me. He agreed and he closed auction, cancelled all bids and sold it to me. A seller will go where the most money is, they would be daft not to. Most of what I buy I do in a similar way, I can't be bothered bidding over 9 days, when I want something, I want it yesterday not in a fortnight :D

I bid on and was watching 4 winter tyres for 9 days. On the 10th it was gone and my bid cancelled.

I think a lot of sellers would think twice about using Ebay if there wasn't the facility to end an auction early.

really? that would be excellent, get rid of the timewasters and leave it for people who are happy with the way it works. I must drop them a suggestion....
