But then what's the point of Ebay being an actual auction site?

Everyone may as well go back to buying/selling with Exchange and Mart.
    All is fair in business.

Am reminded when I turned down a BIN offer of £180 for an item I was selling, opting instead to let the bid run its course, foolishly thinking I could get a better offer. The bid ran its course and as a result of letting it, the item sold for £125, meaning I came out worse off from the original offer.

I would not make that mistake again, I set myself a price limit on the hope the item is sold at that price or more, if someone makes me an offer of the price I have in mind, I am more likely going to accept it.

I've pulled items in the past when the bids weren't satisfactory. It happens.

Then why didn't you list them as BINs, or at the lowest start price you'd accept, or with reserves? :)

There's got to be an element of fair play (and sticking to the rules!) with Ebay surely?

I guess that depends whether your buying or selling. I've lost count how many items I have been outbid as a result of snipe bids.

Saving money mostly. I didn't want to pay Ebay for the listing.

I usually snipe items - and have been sniped against obviously - but it's still a fair auction and the highest bidder wins.

Its all about making the maximum amount of money with the minimum amount of costs, as in any business. If someone makes me a good enough offer, I am not likely to turn it down for a lower one.

I do this quite a bit, and never because I've been offered more money.
I have a number of friends who are new to eBay, believe the hype about starting things at . 99p, then end up selling too cheaply. I always remind them they can pull the listing in the dying throes if its not reached a decent price.

I think a lot of sellers would think twice about using Ebay if there wasn't the facility to end an auction early.

I recently pulled a listing for a travel cot I was selling. It cost £120 brand new.
I had a lot of watchers and bids of £17

2 days before the auction end a family member contacted DP and asked if they could borrow the travel cot for when their baby arrives next week to keep at granny's house. We told them it was on ebay as we needed the money and they offered us £40 for it. A decent amount of money and a lot less hassle so i pulled it
