http://giffgaff.com/goodybags (voicemail uses inclusive minutes).
IIRC, at T-mobile voicemail comes from the allowance too apparently.0 -
Looking on the Giffgaff site it says - "You need to top-up by top-up voucher, top-up by credit card or buy a goodybag from your credit card at least every 3 months to receive free giffgaff to giffgaff calls"..not sure what this means? If I get enough minutes and texts I shouldn't need to top up. Could somebody please explain. thank you0

This means what is says. Giffgaff to giffgaff calls are free (i.e. don't use inclusive minutes) provided that you topup every 3 months or use your credit to buy a 'goodybag'.
So if I am not texting to another giffgaff user then it doesn't matter and I don't need to worry about topping up??0 -
If you're not using the goodybags and just using true PAYG - ie topup once every however long, then calls to numbers outside of giffgaff are chargeable from your 'credit' balance - whereas calls to other giffgaff users are free, and will remain free so long as you topup at least once every 3 months.
The goody bags are bought by topping up, and then buying each month. These give you a calls and texts to other networks allowance (+ data depending on the goodybag chosen) - therefore meaning that giffgaff to giffgaff calls/texts remain free all of the time.0 -

Thank you Tony, I do understand this. I suppose what I am trying to find is simply a sim only that will give me answerphone messages free. Nothing complicated. 3 network does not work in my area and so far haven't found an alternative.0 -
As far as I know - Virgin gives you access to voicemail from your allowances, but when those run out, voicemail retrieval is still free.
Their sim only plans start from about £7 a month which includes 150 minutes/unlimited texts and 500mb data.
Virgin runs on the EE network (not 4G) - so if your coverage is OK with Orange and/or Tmob then this might work?0 -

If free voicemail is your only requirement, what's wrong with White Mobiele then? AFAIK they use EE.
Thank you Grumbler. I must tell you that I am seriously not familiar with mobiles or mobile networks or any of the techno speak that is used. I looked at White mobile from your link but in truth I have been looking for so long my eyes are weary and my brain fried. I have found a sim only Tesco for £10.50 per month that includes voicemail in the minutes. I am now ending my search to have a nervous breakdown. I appreciate you love what you do but this is a chore and headache for some "older" women who still need to seriously budget. Please be gentle with us Grumbler.0
