Credit card application

Options
I graduated a couple of years ago, taking through my student account to become a grad account.
On 17th Apr I applied for a Barclaycard CC and got rejected. I would hazard a guess that it's due to my continued use of the overdraft on my grad account and the fact that I've never had a CC before.
They followed up with an email from applywithconfidence.com suggesting high APR CCs. I am going to apply for one of them to try and build credit. Couple of questions:
- If they sent me the email, does that mean they are saying, based on the Credit check they just ran on me, that I will 100% be accepted or are they just trying to advertise other products?
- With one of the higher APR cards, since it's a higher chance I'll be accepted, how long should I wait from the previous application?

Basically, I'm new to this so any and all advice would be happily welcomed.

They are just selling you other products, nothing more substantial than that.

You could try one more application now, but if its declined I'd wait 3-6 months before applying for anything else.

Having said all this, about a year ago I decided I wanted one further card in addition to the 2 I already had. I applied for 7 all in the space of about a few hours, thinking I'd get at least 1 of them. All 7 turned up within the next few weeks...

Oh, and I failed to mention, I haven't got the best credit score by any means. At the time I had 3 defaults on my report. I've still got one but its due to disappear in about 4 months and then I'll have a clean report.

Goes to show you can get plenty of cards with a not great report...

Also goes to show that loads of applications in a short space of time isn't always a disaster.
  • Thanks.
I know Aqua and Vanquis are considered the best cards for people new to credit so I will probably be going for one of those. Would people suggest one over the other and are there reasons?

Vanquis. Easier to get than Aqua.

The order of easiness is thus (easiest first)-: Vanquis, Capital One, Aqua, then any from the Creation range.
  • Thanks again. Earlier you mentioned I could try one more application now. With Vanquis if it's the easiest to get would I have to have something massive on my credit history to get refused?
I've got no past ccjs, not been declared bankrupt, am on electoral role, above average salary.

Many people are constantly getting accepted for credit cards with high limits even with continuous use of their overdrafts including my OH,its just this time you failed their credit scoring.

Put it this way, your history sounds better than mine was when I got mine.

No application is guaranteed, and only the card companies themselves know their accentance criteria, but from what you've said I'd guess that you've got a reasonable to good chance of getting it.

No harm in trying, other than it will limit your chances of success with getting any other cards for a couple of months, but since Vanquis is the easiest to get, in your situation its certainly what I'd be doing.
  • Just looking at the Vanquis online application, does it matter that I don't have a landline at home. I mean, I have a phone connected so I have the internet, but no phone plugged in. I can put a mobile and work number in though.
  • Oh, and should I wait to apply until I've looked at the report from my failed Barclaycard application?
  • Applied through Vanquis after checking my Equifax credit report (which is what the letter I got from Barclaycard application said they use). They say they need to speak to me on the phone, but from looking around this forum that appears to be a good sign (that I've not been instantly rejected and they want to sell me optional extras with the card).
    Fingers crossed!
