Broadband on 2 PCs

As T4i says, a router is probably the best way to go. To get two different connections wouldn't be worth it. Get one connection and upgrade it to something faster if you are struggling.
Wireless could be a way to go (wireless "g"). Obviously it's not as quick nor reliable as a cabled (CAT 5/6) network, but it saves running cable around your house. One thing you will find is that the connection may drop every so often. Wireless connections conflict with things such as cordless phones, microwaves ovens etc... as they interfere with the packets being sent which can cause a delay or connection being dropped."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
T4i wrote:I wouldnt call it a BIG difference but theres a difference alright. Thing is if you go wireless you will need a router and two wireless network cards.
If the router is set-up near the main PC downstairs she wouldn't need a wireless card for that one as it would connect straight to the ethernet card. A cable (RJ45?) is usually supplied with router"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Are you ADSL or Cable BB? What sort of modem do you have?
You'll need to establish this before choosing a router"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

In response to the "(RJ45?)":
Spot on, although technically to stop confusion, RJ45 is the type of connector, CAT 5 (or 6 etc...) is the type of cable. Sorry, don't mean to sound rude."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

No, you weren't rude at all and I don't mind being corrected when I get something wrong, saves confusion to others then
At least I got the right connection then"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

we're on AOL BB, does that help????
I'm completely in the dark here - not even quite sure what i'd be searching for on ebay/ebuyer/dabs etc!!!!
I think wireless seems to be the way to go for us as I'll be upstairs..... my room is above where t'other computer is tho...0 -
AOL is just your ISP ... need to know how the BB comes into your house, either via Cable or BT (ADSL). Also, whether you have a USB modem or does it plug into the ethernet card in your PC."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

bulldog are doing a good 4 Mbps + unlimited calls for just £39 a month and only 1 month contract. Don't know if they do your location.

To precis the other thread - 2 choices
1. connect them together with a cable and a card in each PC and set up connection sharing, which means in your case the downstairs one needs to be on for yours to connect
2. get a router/modem and connect with cables to each pc; then they can access independently
I think you have 2 equivalent methods for wireless
1. get a wireless card in each pc; set up ad hoc network and share connection
2. as 2 before, but the router has wireless as well. There are some wireless 4 in 1 routers etc for around £80, plus the cards of course. I think there is a BT Voyager one with a special price for 2 cards included
nb if you do use connection sharing, some software firewalls do not support this (eg Zone Alarm)0
