From where i am the bridge is much nearer.
What a foolish comment . It was asked from Liverpool by the op . If you are much closer to the runcorn bridge IE speke / aigburth / huyton etc then Delemere and Chester is easily done ( unless your walking-) I could do Speke to Chester in 30/40 mins easy)

If you were going from Liverpool to Chester you'd better off taking the train, there's one every fifteen minutes and by the time you've paid to park in Chester the train is bound to be cheaper. It takes just over forty minutes and that's including stopping at about half a million (*) stations along the way. The main downside is that the trains Miseryrail operate are always grotty and smelly.

    (* - A slight exaggeration).

I know all that. I live on the Wirral, so in between Liverpool and Chester. The reason I said what I did, was because the other poster said it was more than an hour away (which we now know, they just meant for themselves).

Merseyrail trains are fab, I don't know when the last time was that you were on one, but they're not grotty and smelly at all?

The last time I travelled on Miseryrail was last December (Chester to Birkenhead and back) and the trains were as smelly as always. The thing that always strikes me about them is that there's a station literally every two or three minutes and all the doors down one side of the train open automatically at every station so they get plenty of fresh air coming in but despite that you always feel you're sat in a tramps sock.

It also doesn't help that the seats are so close together so if you're anything over four foot tall you don't get anything like enough leg room when they get busy. I always try to find one of those fold down seats by the doors which at least allow to sit without running the risk of cramping up but on occasions I've decided it's more comfortable to stand than to try to fold my legs into a non-existant space.
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us
Baby we were born to walk
  • From Crosby I reckon you would probably get to Lancaster in an hour... (M58 onto M6) You could always take the back roads upto Blackpool (through Southport, that's a nice drive!) going south, through the tunnel, There's The Wirral, Port Sunlight has the Lady Lever art gallery if you're into that sort of thing, there's Hoylake, there's an island there (Hilbre Island) where I think at certain times of the year is accessible!!
You should easily hit Chester in the hour, if you don't mind travelling that little further there's Cholmondeley Castle the other side of Chester!
Going north (again) but a little further than an hour is Skipton and Clitheroe!!
North of Skipton there is Asgarth falls, and Wensleydale... It's do-able for a day trip but its a long slog!!! (Start early, you'll get back knackered, but it's worth it).

Wirral is a decent day out depending what you want to do . New Brightons on the up . I like Parkgate & Thurstaton. Visit the holy place called Anfield if you fancy a bite. Anthony Gormleys a place in time is just off crosby front . Southport has some decent places to eat and walk with nice shops and gardens . As above Lancaster is within a hour from that end of town and worth a visit if youve not been . Bet there is lots you havent been to in Liverpool too .

I was on one yesterday and found no smell at all and I've got a very sensitive nose. (It's not YOU is it? ;):p )The seats are a good width, but you're right about the leg room. I hate sitting opposite someone.

Overall I find them really clean, you must have just been unlucky.
