It's about 4k ! I was very young and stupid with credit cards and now I'm not in a situation to start paying it back as I'm not working & pregnant again.

For a credit card I would send them an offer of £1 per month with a letter explaining your situation and including your I+E. there's very little they can do that they haven't already done - default notice.

Offer £1 token payments if they manage to get hold of you. The absolute worst case scenario is that they take you to court and a judge will give you a CCJ. A judge will never order you to pay more than you can afford. Rent, council tax, utility bills, food etc. are all higher priorities than credit card debts and you won't be expected to pay money you don't have.

Concentrate on your pregnancy and don't panic.

That's if they even have any jurisdiction over here... they might not even be able to pursue the debt in England. Not too sure about that, maybe someone else can answer.

  • I think they could of, yes. They can chase your for the debt anytime from six years from the default date, so perhaps they are just not actively looking for you just now?

U should maybe speak to a debt charity for advice. Im not sure how small token payments can be, but Im sure I read before that some people pay £1 a month token payments. Could perhaps be an option for you?

Congratulations on your pregnancy.. I would suggest doing a SOA so you know how much you have available to pay your essential bills and support a child :)

P.S - I have loads debt from being young and silly too, dont beat yourself up about it..

Can a court issue a CCJ for a credit agreement signed in Ireland?

County Court Judgement, it means a court will decide that a debt is yours and issue an order for you to pay it.

Like I said earlier I am not sure if a UK court can issue a CCJ for an Irish debt. I would take advice on that from the CAB if I was you.

Absolutely no idea, that's what I was saying in my last paragraph. They probably don't have any authority over here and probably can't pursue the debt anyway. Was just trying to put it into perspective as a worst case :)

    What is a ccj ?

A CCJ is a County Court Judgment. It's basically a judgment issued by a County Court Judge that orders you to pay back a debt in a certain way. CCJs are public records which stay on the register of Judgments, Orders and Fines for six years which means that anybody can apply to see if you have a CCJ, and they will appear on your credit files for six years.

If you don't pay a CCJ as agreed, the court can instruct bailiffs to attend at your property and seize goods, but it's unlikely that that will happen as the court will only order you to pay what you can afford. If your circumstances change you can go back to the court and make an application to vary the terms of the CCJ.
