Change from the self service supermarket till

Annoys me that these machines are full of 1p, 5p and 20p coins but lack 2p 10p and 50p coins.

I put in an amount that should result in 50p back or 60p and you get 2 x 20p and 2 x 5p coins or 3 20p coins instead of a 50p or 50p and 10p coin.

Expect change with 4p i.e. 2 x 2p coins and get 4 x 1p coins.

What is it with these supermarkets?

I always get rid of my copper coins in these self service tills. Better than Coinstar!

These machines don't have all coins in them eg 2p/10p/£2. It's unnecessary as change can be given without them. Having all coins in the machine would take too much space and would be more to go wrong. Really can't see your problem.

I just re-use the change next time I go, and if the bill comes to something like 3.16 I put the 16p in first then maybe a fiver and that way I'm more likely to just get 2 £1 coins as change

Really? Doesn't one 50p take up less space than 20p+20p+5p+5p? So it's not the space issue.

So perhaps it's because there are less coin dispensers to go wrong? But that means the coin dispensers have to do at least double the work and so will fail/jam sooner (because the MTBF is the same)

So what is the reason? The answer is the cost of buying and handling change. By reducing the number of different coins/notes the cost goes down. The software can just as easily make the change.

It's only the likelihood of people making mistakes that stop the cashier tills from doing the same. (Although some retailers have phased out the 2p)

Yes but how often do 50ps get used?

I think it's down to the stats of what the average change is from a shopping trip. If the stats show that only 1/4 of change requires a 50p, then it would be pointless having it in there when the space can be used for more common change.

I do agree with the handling bit also.

When I dealt with them the machines could only hold so many coins in each storage 'slot' if you like. We would load enough 50 pences in the morning, but you'd have to judge how many would be put in too so it didn't get full, it will give 50's to start with but eventually they will run low so it will start giving out 20's etc. Same with 2 pences.

We were constantly refilling the 50 pences and 2 pences but if we didn't the machines would still work.

Hope that makes sense, hard to describe.

Self-service tills are a great way to get rid of any loose pennies/5ps (make sure you do it when it's a quiet period)

    Saves paying the coinstar fees.
