"I am fine" is ample. Probing further would be rude and uncomfortable.

Yes she does, either when I walk past her or when she firsts sees me. Hello and goodbyes are always exchanged within my team, don't give it a second thought.

The friendlier my bosses are, the more suspicious I get. I call my head of department the 'smiling assassin'.(not to her face obv) Whenever she's really friendly it means trouble is brewing......

I sit relatively close to my immediate line manager and those two above him. They're all pleasant and happy to have a chat while making coffee, both small talk and about work related issues.

Some people say good morning, some people don't, it's just the way they are.

Mostly my team leaders say hello in the morning, but it's no big deal

The message to the OP is that some people don't like that approach (not neccasarily "morning", but "how are we all").

Those people would hate to work in the last two places I worked at, where we would have a daily standup in the morning. (It's part of an agile methodology)

During this 'standup', each member of the team has to say what we did the day before, what we are planning to do today, and what is blocking us from doing that.

I work in a large office and always greet everyone with a good morning and they always reply back. My manager is great and very approachable. My Manager's Line Manager, every week walks around 20 desks and always asks us how we are. I love how he takes time out of his busy schedule to do this. He's very involved and very approachable. You don't get many of those nowadays.

My last line manager would greet us with "there's 97 emails in the inbox" or "start with those contract changes" never did she ever say "good morning!"

Other days she would leave a post it note on your monitor with her commands.

The best was when she would email to tell you to do something. When she was sitting next to you.

I don't think the words "please" or "thanks" were in her vocabulary. Let alone "well done" or any form of acknowledgement of a job well done. Not the best way to motivate your team. :(

Says it all that she's never invited to our catch-up lunches now we've been made redundant!

    Hi,

I used to manage staff and one staff member who only worked a few hours in the morning for us never used to say morning or hello when they arrived in our department. I used to say on a regular basis morning to them so can work both ways, it made me as the manager start to not bother when all one way, do you say morning or hello to them when you see them?

im with you on that coco i find the ones that dont bother to say hello first are usually the ones that moan if you dont speak first
it a two way street if i go round greeting all the staff in the morning it then can come across as a chore not an action of being polite, by the end of my shift i will have said hello to most if not all.
