I know this as I was due to pay the deposit on my new flat to our solicitor yesterday, and I tried in the morning in Birmingham, and it still wasn't rectified when I arrived back in London in the afternoon.
To their credit, the Nationwide staff let me in early when they arrived to open up this morning and found me waiting outside to get the payment made first thing. It was a very anxious day though, and I was being chased by my solicitor, their solicitor, and our estate agents all day long!
Stories like yours really explain the seriousness of these computer breakdowns. Glad everything worked out for you."Look after your pennies and your pounds will look after themselves"0 -
I never believe things will go through smoothly until it does.
Years ago, I arranged a bank transfer from an investment firm to an overseas destination. I was overseas waiting for it. Over several days, multiple phones calls and e-mails came back with re-assurances from an idiot whose name I forget now, saying he "checked" the transfer details. Finally I demanded to see some kind of internal record, and he sent me a scanned copy of their internal telegraphic form, which clearly had one digit WRONG.
Another occasion, I wanted to send the money to the solicitor early, just in case the bank stops the transfer because that account never has so much money going through it, and then the deal can fall through (Call me paranoid if you want). The solicitor says some people demand interest if the money sits in their account, but it's a current account so the bank doesn't pay interest, so they have a policy of in/out quick so they don't have to deal with the nuisance clients.
It's not just computer glitches that catch you out, so don't be too harsh on the poor thing. It works 99.9% of the time, non-stop, where's the gratitude for the sterling service the rest of the time?0 -
Still unavailable....
This seems to be a regular occurence across the banking sector which worries me in what they are not telling us!0 -
Having just moved to Nationwide if this is going to be a regular occurrence I will be looking for somewhere with a more reliable online service.:(0

If a computer system has a hiccup, can anyone from MSE editorial explain how that translates into a banking blunder?
Not Nationwide's first 'blunder' according to MSE News...
