eBay postage - can I change delivery method after auction ends?

Hi,

As the title suggests - I sold an item on eBay & misjudged new postage costs (my fault for not triple & quadruple checking)

I stated Royal Mail 2nd class but on going to the PO I underestimated by over £2. Can I send via Hermes now & inform the seller or do I just need to learn my lesson & put it down to experience?

It's totally my fault - the new costs are just so high for anything even slightly big so I thought I must have got it wrong. Stupid of me really.

I'd appreciate you sharing your knowledge or thoughts.
Thanks

Contact the buyer and explain the situation. THey may be happy to accept myhermes, but it may cause them issues if they are not be in to accept the delivery.

I'd be really narked off if I expected Royal Mail and a courier tried to deliver, as I'm not in during the day and couriers don't deliver weekends, whereas with Royal Mail I live near the depot.

If you can cover the £2, I'd suck it up and learn from it, but that will depend on how much you made on your item.
  • Thanks for taking time out to reply Campdave. :-)

That was my thought process too - if they have to travel a long distance to the depot to collect the item they would be miffed.

I think I'll just chalk it down to experience & go with RM. You win some & you lose some.

Better to try keep my stars & feedback in tact for at least another day!
  • My feeling here is ... you might be ok. I don't care how it arrives, courier or Royal Mail. I hate getting an item where the seller has been Royally ripped off by Royal Mail.

I would just send it hermes, I've in the past myself accidently left up for rm 2nd class option when I charged for hermes. As I use both it's easy sometimes to forget to change the check box. You would be very unlucky to get a buyer who moaned or even noticed that you had sent it by hermes instead of rm. IMO as long as the item gets there within the time specified most buyers don't care. Hermes are sometimes easier as they will leave it somewhere 'safe' instead of making the buyer collect from somewhere. There is no depo for a buyer to collect from anyway with hermes the courier will just come back the next day.

If the item has lots of bids and went for more than you were expecting, just send it RM

I have noticed in a few of your posts you have issues
So to be clear, the seller has a choice of what service to use and what to pass onto the buyer in costs
So they dont get 'ripped off'

Not stalking me are you? ;)

  • Thanks for you replies - think I'll go with RM & suck it up that postage cost double what I anticipated - it was my fault after all!

I am really aware of charging such high postage - that's even with not adding anything on for packing materials etc. I worry that buyers wouldn't look at the label with the price on & leave neg feedback assuming I'd ripped them off.

Anyway back to see the smiley, happy post office pit bull! ;-)
