Virgin Delay to Barbados

Hi everybody I wonder if any of you can help? On 23rd August 2008 (flight number VS0029) myself and three other members of my family took a life time holiday to Barbados with Virgin. We all travelled Premium. The flight left on time but within an hour we could see we we not going anywhere only flying over Gatwick. The pilot said that an engine had failed and we were going back to Gatwick. Now comes the problem we were left on the ground with no announcements for over eleven hours, so lost a days holiday. I have written to Virgin who have declined my claim as it was out of their hands. This is maybe but we were still stranded on the ground for over well over the three hours of delay time needed to claim. Has anyone else had this problem or were successful getting compensation for this flight?
This is the first time I have every been on a forum and look forward to anyones responses.
