I put my Tesco order through this morning and it went through VbV and I wasn't asked for any part of my password.

My Halifax card does that with many retailers. Seems they have some security system in the background that checks on retailers and how likely they are to be used by fraudsters.

Hate the damn thing. Always hit "skip" until I found some sites (Gap, Banana Republic, T-mobile*) rejected my card as "invalid"; contacting them, they told me it was because they won't accept cards without VBV. Reluctantly enrolled and can now order from Gap but not using Firefox. If you're finding it not displaying properly (lacking a "submit" button was one issue I encountered), try Chrome or even IE.

My two penn'orth? If you're not enrolled, don't bother. It's nothing but a pain and largely ineffective window-dressing.

Sorry to be negative, but that's how it's worked for me.

    * They lied, but that's a whole nother post

Some banks force you to enrol when you have used your card up to 3 times.

Anyway VBV has been switched off for one of my credit cards.

It must be the fact that every single time I've used it online for the past 14 months I have had to reset my password.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

just for balance - I've been using VbV for years (presumably since it first came out) and have never had any sort of problem with it, not a single one.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

VBV has been disabled for my lloyds tsb card after I complained like hell to them! It now shows up for a few seconds & then goes to payment successful!
I am still stuck with it for my other cards but what bugs me is they say the cannot reset your password BUT when you attempt to reset it & use your old one, it says you cannot use that password as you have already used it! So... somewhere they must keep a record?
I make a point now of resetting it with a profanity!
Totally pointless having this stupid system anyway!

They don't keep a record of it that's readable or retrievable. When you set a password the system applies a one-way encryption algorithm ("hashing") to the password and saves the result of that.

So when you try to set it again, if the new value after the hashing is applied matches a result previously saved, then it'll reject it as being non-unique.

But because it's only ever the encrypted result that's saved, not the plain text password, it's not a readable value.

Lloyds cannot turn off VbV. It has nothing to do with the bank. Yes they do access the systems and can reset passwords for you.
VbV is a retailer based system. Hence why not every retailer has the system in place....
They have to pay for it.

My Halifax card works in the same way. What is happening is. Your trans goes via VbV then to the banks security system. The banks have lists of retailers that are safe and secure to use and do not suffer from fraud.
    These simply go straight through.
