Problems with Verified by Visa

I opened a new bank account with the Co-op last November, all was fine with my debit card when paying for things online.

In the last month this has changed and it's due to VBV. The bank set this up for me automatically, and I can no longer make purchases online as each and every purchase is now blocked by VBV.
The strange thing is that I don't even get chance to enter my password, I just get a card details not verified message on screen.

I've now spoken to the bank 3 times on the phone who all claim to have now reset things and to leave it 2 hours before trying the transaction again.

Followed there advice each time and it still doesn't work!!

Has this happened to anyone else, and if so how did you sort it?

I'm seriously thinking of shutting my account!!

I have had nothing but issues with the damn thing.

So far i have never managed to complete a purchase where its used.

Was so angry the other day i wanted tickets to a once in a lifetime event. Tickets sell out fast. made it into the virtual waiting room and got some amazing seats was so excited. get to verified and the 'submit' button is missing......... ticket master timed me out and i out lose the seats. Arrgh . re-do for cruddier seats, fails to recognise details. Re-do for even worse seats and it freezes. finally get seats that you need binos to see the stage on a mates card.

Go to order some jeans on-line. apparently im not registered. (yes, yes i am) 45 mins on a call to verified and it still wouldn't work - ordered via OH card.

Book hotel, incorrect details (nope all correct checked three times) had to ring up and do over the phone.. lost out on the online discount.

I have rang my bank and the visa team members helpful advice. avoid sites that use it!
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...
  • I had this problem when my BT credit card was changed to just an MBNA credit card. I phoned the bank and had my account reset more than once. It still didn't work but eventually I had an email apologising for technical difficulties and after that my card started working again. I couldn't even get onto the verified webpage to correct any details.

When it was originally set up I used to have to enter a password. The system now bypasses the password bit and nothing has to be entered. I think the problem might lie with verified by visa rather than the bank and a new card with another bank might cause the same problems.

    Dear Forum ,
In January I made an extra payment to Scottish Power using my Coop Debit Card (VBV) and it went thru' OK , but last Wed 17/04/13 it failed at the VBV stage whilst asking for characters from a word from my Coop account , and it prevented me making any response to the query . After contacting the online banking help desk the Coop turned off VBV (can take up to one hour to take effect) and the transaction then went thru' fine and I suspect they then turn VBV back on , but I've not tried it

    Which bank?

I've always just left mine unregistered and skip it when you get to the select password screen. Yes it's a pain to enter my dob, expiry date, sort code etc but I find it's the lesser of two evils - something I can actually rememeber vs. something that will need a reset when I use my card online (I rarely use it online).

    Dear Forum ,
Today as a test I made the minimum £5.00 payment to Scottish Power using my Coop Debit card and the VBV screen has changed from asking for characters from a word stored on my Coop account to asking for that word to be entered into what is labelled as PASSWORD , so it looks as if changes and/or standardisation is underway to the VBV system at least as far as the Coop is concerned . On entering the entire word into the requested PASSWORD field the payment appeared to go thru' OK

As an aside-Verified by Visa is just a joke anyway and is very easy to bypass/fraud so i wouldnt set too much store by it !
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Your bank DO NOT set up VbV for you..... YOU have to set it up yourself.
VbV has nothing to do with your bank. It is a retailer based system, that RETAILERS pay VISA extra to have in place.

VbV now asks for 3 random letters/numers out of the PASSWORD, you set up with them. NOT your bank password. Unless you used the same one.....

Your bank will have a department that will have access to the back end of VbV and can reset it for you so you can enter in a new password.
Never ASSUME anything its makes a

  • I put my Tesco order through this morning and it went through VbV and I wasn't asked for any part of my password.

There may be overzealous security/advert-busting software or settings on your computer preventing the VbV window appearing.

As far as I'm aware, it originates from Visa itself. Some security software/settings may prevent an external window appearing on a secure page.
  • My other half has the same problem with his Co op card too - he's forever having to ring up the Co op to get them to reset it. All his other cards work fine, it's just the Co op one. Very odd.
