I've been accepted onto a part time uni course and for the times I'm away would like to have a laptop to take with me. Will use it for Internet access, streaming films and using Microsoft office. Could anyone recommend a decent laptop as I'm clueless and don't want to spend too much and end up with something rubbish!
Many thanks in advance for any help

There's at least half a dozen "I want a laptop" threads ongoing with some options, probably need to post a budget to get further ideas

Anything can handle those tasks, but they don't all come with office.

Dell laptops usually offer good value. Don't skimp on the RAM, 4GB is good if possible.

What do you think of this one? http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-v5-171-11-6-laptop-silver-19414897-pdt.html
The battery life is terrible but the laptop is light, has 6 GB of RAM (which should suffice) and the display resolution is superior than it's 15" cousins.0 -

Thanks for the responses!
Probs want to spend around £3-400 at the most. I'm totally clueless so don't want to go in and have a saleman see me as an easy target and sell me something ridiculous! Is it cheaper to buy one with all the office stuff already?
Thanks again will look through what you have posted.0 -
You may be able to get MS Office at a significantly cheaper rate via your Uni.0

You may able to use student version of MS office, which will be cheaper.
Alternatively just you use Libre Office/ Open Office.0 -

MS Office is rarely bundled with consumer laptops, and your budget won't allow more than the Student edition. £400 will give you a vastly better choice of machine than £300, but you need to firm up the specs a bit. The first decision is screen size-I presume 15 inch given your low budget?
Absolutely any modern laptop will do the tasks you specify, just stay away from PCW.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yep stay away from PCW, the money grabbers! I've never fallen for their traps and sales techniques as I'm a IT student and obviously I know the difference between a rip off laptop and a decent laptop that is useful for a students needs.0
