We dont seem to have bought any music or apps on it.

Presumably these are pending charges? Sometimes companies will reserve a small amount to verify an account. These pending charges drop off (disappear) after a few days. It's usually only £1, but Tesco do £2.

65p is probably about $1, so it could just be that. Have you purchased anything from a US company?

Unless you've purchased from Amazon.com, Amazon will charge you in sterling. The company being American has no bearing on what currency you are charged in.

If you don't recognise the transactions, never paid in USD and never heard of "DOMESTIC WELWYN GARDEN" contact Santander ASAP.

OP - you have been given some excellent advice here. Please follow it :)

Both transactions will be pending transactions and neither I guess will actually be followed up with real transactions, well not for those amounts.

They should drop off in a few days...

  • So there I was this evening trying to buy ONE facial cleaning product that I can no longer buy in my local town because the high street shop has gone under due to online sales. However, upon trying to order the £3 facial product from Amazon UK, their auto-charge has been applied before the Pay Now appears. Hello? Amazon UK sent out surveys before this automatic surcharge was applied and I HAVE A COPY as evidence - Amazon UK need to get rid of the additional surcharge below £10 otherwise the general public are forced to buy in bulk to meet the charge. Amazon UK are cheaters forcing their members to do surveys on the company and then end of year add in a surcharge. Sorry, but that's not on.

Is it a surcharge? Or a pre-auth? Or a dummy payment to check validity of a new card?

I found the following on UK Amazon, which I have to admit I didn't know and which I post here for others:
    About Charges for GBP 1.00

In most cases, an amount of GBP 1.00 showing on your account is related to one of our security measures to confirm the validity of your payment card.

When you place your first order with us, or use a card for the first time, we may contact your payment card's issuing bank to confirm that your card is a valid number, and hasn't been reported as lost or stolen. This is communicated via a GBP 1.00 authorisation.

However, we don't proceed with the charge and the GBP 1.00 won't appear as a charge on your statement. The authorisation will lapse after no longer than 10 business days.

Amazon now charge delivery, which was communicated to buyers by e-mail, on items under £10. It is not a surcharge and, as smufflemuppet has seen, is clearly shown as such before you commit to buy.

You'd get charged delivery with most other online retailers. They communicated ahead of time. They even made it relatively clear how you can get around the delivery charge if you purchase other specific products too. Just because they surveyed you, doesn't mean they will follow exactly what you put in your survey?!
