I was expecting this post to continue: My daughter's boyfriend has just proposed to her... AND SHE'S 14!0

I think it's sickening. We don't own our children. Anyone who asked us for our daughter's 'hand in marriage' would not be worthy of her.
Congratulations to your family, OP.
No, we don't own our children, but this young man is respectful and has been brought up well, and in a traditional manner. I certainly didn't think it was sickening, I thought he was quite charming actually. He is a lovely chap, definitely worthy of my daughter, and I am proud to call him my future son-in-law
Thanks to everyone for their congratulations. Coinxoperated, my baby is 22 next week . Even my youngest is a teenager - how old does that make me feel?! I know what you mean though, she will always be my only daughter, and we are close, but she is an adult who needs to live her own life. I just want her to be happy, and fortunately, she has a lovely man to share that happiness with
Robin, thank goodness she isn't just 14! I doubt if I would have been quite so happy, no matter how nice her boyfriend is! I had a proposal at 16, just after my O levels, and it scared the living daylights out of me. I must admit I dumped him fairly sharply! He had even decided on the names of the two daughters that he hoped we would have
Daisegg, congratulations on your marriage. I hope that you will enjoy a long and happy life together

very happy news. Congratulations to you all. Love it that he asked permission - sounds a lovely lad.0

How lovely - and asking permission shows respect for her family, in this day and age more that he wants you to feel included, which is a good sign for their future.Love many, trust few, learn to paddle your own canoe.
“Don’t have children if you can’t afford them” is the “Let them eat cake” of the 21st century. It doesn’t matter how children got here, they need and deserve to be fed.0 -
I think it was lovely that he'd asked permission. Its not about ownership its about respect!
