router/internet probs HELP!

Hi all you techies, can anyone help or explain the following.

Last night around 7 my internet dropped out. I am with orange, and no real probs as such. well I have a wireless router belkin F5D7630 UK4 connected to my main pc. the syn light and data light went out, so I retrieved my old speedtouch modem and attached it instead, the asdl continued to flash so that was no good. I rang orange and they said to test the line the computer would have to be left on all night with the speedtouch modem connected. So I wasn't happy about leaving the pc on all night coz the fans are not the quietest things so I said I would connect it to the laptop. So far so good. I turned off the pc and the modem suddenly worked! I left it on all night and returned this morning to see if I could suss out what was wrong. Well the speedtouch allowed me to connect but as soon as I booted up the pc the connection dropped out. I then switched off pc and connection returned. Well as you can imagine I was stumped. So then I connected up the belkin router to the laptop and low and be hold it burst forth and connected. I turned the pc on again and the connection dropped out. Neither the laptop or the pc are connected in any way! The pc is not connected to the phone line either. I also have borrowed my brothers belkin router and it does the same with it. So because both computers were in the same room I brought the laptop into the kitchen and connected it up to my router bingo it connected, I then went down the hall to the pc and switched it on and the connection on the router dropped out again, when I switched it off the router came on. Can anyone help before I starting getting someone to exorcise the house for ghosts?

Oh and I cannot get emails via outlook express as cant find server pop.orangehome.co.uk or smtp.oranghome.co.uk

Please help.

Does anyone have any ideas? Who do you think I should contact BT,Belkin or orange?

Hi once again to all you techies, Looking at my previous post noone seems to have been able to help. Well may be you could help on this one. I am writing while I have connection, Very intermittent.

Here goes, internet connect still coming and going, more going than coming. I am with orange have a belking 7230 wireless router, and was able to find the hidden page of the router detailing line status etc. When the connection is down the line status fluctuates between idle,G.hs handshaking, and training, when connected it shows Showtime.

I also shows operation date noise margin, output power and attenuation,

Can anyone advise me if this problem I am having is due to Orange messing about with the exchange, before I throw up the head and change isp?

    Many thanks

Does the connection quality improve if you plug the router into your main (primary) BT socket?
  • Thought I'd replied to this before but can't see it now.
I had similar problem a while ago after installing a new mobo and found that the USB driver was not man enough to drive a Netgear modem which was wired at the time. It would drive BT Voyager ok. I bought a powered USB hub and everythings ok.

Sorry for taking so long, connection down. Well pc connects via ethernet to wireless router. not a new router have had it for a couple of years. Did try 330 speedtouch and it wouldn't connect either.

No solutions but will watch this thread with interest.

I also am on Orange and have a Belkin wireless router. My connection drops all the time on both desk top and laptop. We replaced the router but this didn't solve the problem, and whilst the computers aren't brand spanking new they are not ancient either so can't believe they aren't up to supporting the wireless system.

My other bugbear is how slow my connection is. We are supposed to have 8mb broadband and it is regularly slower than dial up.

I'll be glad to have a solution if someone can find it.

Another suggestion: Contact Orange tech support and ask for the MTU Packet size appropriate for your exchange, you may need to alter this setting on your modem/router.
  • Get Borange to get BT to check the line (most likely BT problem, that's why they say go through your provider!), more often than not the problem is not homebased, after all it's been working before!, they just waste your time and try and blame the user for the fault:mad:

I suspect that Orange may have changed something at the exchange (e.g. switched to LLU) and caused this problem. Check your exchange status on https://www.samknows.com
