Poor Mans Broadband

Hi all -

LOOKING FOR VERY CHEAP INTERNET SOLUTION.

I am currently unemployed and the area I live in has almost no work on offer - I am trying hard to get work, but there's not much out there.

My question is this.... I am currently online using TalkTalks broadband. I pay about £40 a month for phone calls and internet. Its a great deal and if I were working Id stick with it.

However I am only getting £60 per week to live on as I have deductions from Job Seekers Allowance. Internet is my hobby and I really would like to keep it.

Could anyone advise me of a way of getting cheap free broadband. This would not have to be to a computer at home. I have heard about WIFI but no very little about it, and I have heard about dongles and again know very little about them.

I have a desktop PC and my parents will buy my laptop if that would be a solution

My U.S girlfriend recently bought a Kindle and it has seemingly free internet access, are there any devices in UK that offer something similar.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Kindle etc does not have free Internet .
It has Wifi so can connect to your own home network or WiFI hotspots in cafe bars Mc Donalds Etc .

Their is no free internet available as such .

First you need to know how much it will cost to close the TT broadband account . When does your contract end ??

£40pm is not a 'great deal' at all for phone and broadband! It's very expensive. Depending on your exchange (unless you are on Market 1), you could get Plusnet for £2.99pm plus line rental-around £14pm in total.

Kindles with 3G have a very basic 'experimental' web browser, but it s so clunky that you'd only ever want to use it in dire emergencies. Amazon is not going to develop it into a free service that people would want to use by choice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Public Library if there is one near enough with internet access.

You could ask if any near neighbours would be willing to grant you access to their WiFi for payment.

the free 3g in kindle is just for basic access to buy ebooks. you can hack it and tether the connection. but i suspect if you use it as your sole internet connection. amazon will shut the mac code down soon enough

No, you can access anywhere you like on the web using the Kindle's browser via 3G, but it's a slow and frustrating experience.

yers im aware that you can access anythig and everything. But it was really designed to just access the amazon store and perhaps read a few blogs. Anything else will be difficult because of the slow speeds and inadeqate web browsing device.

Some people jailbreak the kindle and tether the 3g connector to run their laptops on. This is against terms and you can find yourself blocked by amazon if they notice the high data transfer which will lead them to believe you're tethering. most networks have gone wise to this and can detect tethering based on browsing activity.
