Qatar missed connection + delay - entitled to comp?

Hello.
Thoroughly confused re. what one is and is not entitled to here.
Our Qatar Airways flight from Calcutta to Doha today was delayed by headwinds and landed 25 mins late - leaving us only 30 mins to connect to the Doha-LHR leg.
We had hand luggage only and boarding passes ready so assumed we could still make it and raced straight to the gate with about 15-20 mins to go before take-off, but even though it was still saying 'last call' the chap just stamped 'missed connection' on our boarding passes and sent us to the transfer queue where we were given tickets for the next flight, a 4.5-hour wait.
(The transfer people said that they were told the Calcutta flight was delayed and we had missed our connection before we spoke to them.)
Are we entitled to any EU compensation - or any claim on travel insurance - for arriving 4.5 hours late at LHR and / or denied boarding?
Our first stop presumably is to complain to Qatar and see if the come back with anything?

right OK thanks, thought maybe as the flight's destination was the EU, that might have brought it under the remit - obv. not.
