Hey all you over 50 fellas out there. What would you like as a 50th gift?

An acquaintence of mine is about to turn 50, I don't know him too well but well enough to buy a gift and there is a "do" involved. What is an appropriate gift?

It must be a nightmare if you are a fella and just receive 30 bottles of whiskey on your birthday whther you drink it or not, how boring!

Ideas would be very much appreciated.:)

You are right about the booze, always seems an after thought type of gift.
Only you know him in the way you do, best thing really is to ask, the best pressies for me , never really cost much (around £20) and is usually stuff I can't be bothered to buy myself.

  • As we are all 'of an age', the first of our friends had their 50th's last year. Male friends do tend to be harder to buy for! Our first 50 yr old friend had been in the RAF and we bought him a rather nice remote controlled helicopter, cost about £35, from the Gadget Shop. He loved it, as it was really tricky to fly! Another male friend is a very keen cyclist and did 'Lands End to John o'Groats' for charity in 13 days. However he had a lot of accidents and falls, so we customised him a pair of (gold spray painted) stabilisers and a first aid kit (also customised). I suggest a really good think aout your friends hobbies and interests - a well thought out, well presented joke is far better received than an 'expensive present'...

I've been following this thread on and off and I can't be the only one who is wondering what his age has got to do with it?

People are individuals and have many varied interests. I'm in my 50s I'm into guitars, boats, music, books, the list goes on.

I have a friend the same age, one of his hobbies is building robots, he'd be over the moon with a bag full of Lego Technic or box of servo motors! Another has over a hundred different malt whisky's so a no brainer there.

I sometimes despair of a society that labels and pigeon holes people by age, gender or other pointless identifier. I know a gorgeous brunette who can't wait to get her hands on a MIG welder having done a welding course so she can work on a classic car she's restoring.

Find out what interests him and find something he'll like or use, we don't know him so anything we suggest would be at best a wild guess or at worst some cliched idea of what makes a 'great' present.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
