Do you get charged for using the sat nav on the N95?

  • Nope, you don't. Just make sure you have downloaded your maps onto the Micro-SD using the Nokia map loader avaiable on nokia website, and then you can plot your route without the n95 having to connect to download maps. Easier and faster than having to wait for maps to download enroute.

But if you want voice-navigation then you have to pay extra.

It took me a while to get my head around all the charges because there are potentially charges from 3 different sources being applied at different times!

    To sum up the charges:
    - There is no charge for using the GPS reciever to show your position on a map, no matter what the software.
    - If you use the built in Smart2Go software, the maps themselves are available free but you must download them. If you download them onto PC and put them onto memory card then they are free (you pay for broadband anyway). If you download them on the go, then you will be charged by your network for using the internet on your mobile to download files.
    - If you want voice navigation, that is a voice telling you to 'turn left in 100 yards' etc... then the preloaded software charges a fee for this which is paid to nokia/smart2go.

However, you can still get free voice guidance using software other than the supplied smart2go:
    - TomTom. TomTom mobile softwware currently does not work with the built in GPS unit so you can wait for the latest version. However, it is still possible to use the old TomTom software and an external bluetooth GPS reciever and have TomTom fully working.
    - There is other free GPS software which does work with the internal GPS reciever but the satnav on these is reported to be buggy.

    Hope that explains it.

can you do the post code search on Smart2Go software?
  • Yep, indeed.

Tried it the other day, and it plotted a route to the exact destination.

Hi I have a n95 I dont have a memory card yet and I was wondering about the charges. So when I get my memory card and load the maps onto it, would it have navigation on screen without the voice?

Can someone help me on this other thread I made

Yes, it would but as pointed out earlier, if you want "voice navigation" you got to pay extra.

It will however have silent navigation as you are moving around.
