I once knocked on a front door and a particularly well hung male occupant opened the door buck naked and had a conversation with me on the doorstep as if it were normal. Ive seen him,i cant unsee him.
As i say, there is nothing much i havent seen or witnessed in joe publics homes but the key is to keep calm, carry on, be discrete and dont cause the punter to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.
I do agree with the OP. I only go where i need to go and i like to think that i have the necessary instincts to speak to the customer if i need to depart from that and go somewhere else.
Of course some customers are not embarrassed or uncomfortable..like the female who as i left having done my work, whispered to me that i could come back later and give her a good f****** if i liked.

That cheered me up. :rotfl:0 -
Not much chance of that here..we are supposed to tell the Street Co-ordinator of Neighbourhood Watch when expecting a trademan, then she sets the camera rolling. Not sure if its legal but it is useful.
She has a data base of what they look like, their van and tax disc and number plate, and the bill or quote should give other details.
All just in case the job goes tits up.
So.. no hanky panky either lol.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Maybe a hint of security, Sadie, next time, might deter a nosy trademan.Like Beware Of the Dogs sign or fake interior camera.0

Thanks Ken. I certainly won't leave a tradesman alone to do his job again. I will be watching over his shoulder. What made me even more suspicious is that he said he had filled the bath up and drained it but couldn't find the leak. When I looked the bath was bone dry so he hadn't even turned the tap on. As soon as I turned the tap on the waste pipe started leaking...

OOhhhh...Matron..the tales i could tell...but I wont bore you any further !
Seriously though..I do think its wrong to tar all tradesmen with the same brush. Dont have your view coloured by leeches like Dom Littlewood who has never dirtied his hands and who would have us all believe that all tut Tradesmen are nothing short of builder bummed romany con men. You could just as easily get ripped off or otherwise be compromised by the so called professional classes..

I was trusting him to do his job. I didn't expect him to be creeping about snooping in rooms he shouldn't have been in.
I understand that not every tradesman is untrustworthy but after this it's going to be hard for me to trust anyone to do a job unsupervised in my home.

My approach is that If i am in the front door, I only have to ask /explain if i need to go upstairs. You either trust someone or you dont.
In my experience, most people who work in peoples homes are trustworthy and should be assumed to be so. Even more so if they work for a recognised brand.
Yes, I had invited him into my home. However I regard the initial meeting for a quote in the same way as a job interview - you are sizing each other up to see if you want to work together, assuming the price is acceptable.
I told him I would leave him to measure up, as he doesn't need me to tell him how to do that and a bathroom is generally not the biggest room.
I have recently had building work done in my kitchen. Each builder who came to quote wanted to see the room adjoining the kitchen. The door was closed and without exception, they all asked if they could go into the other room. They didn't just walk in.
When I had selected a builder, he was given a set of keys on the first day, I said "cheerio" and went to work. He kept my keys until the work was finished. He left other trades in my house to carry out their work without him being present. I was happy with this as he vouched for them and I trusted him.
So yes I agree that you should trust tradespeople who are in your home and I am happy to do so, but I do believe that a quote meeting is different from when the person I have chosen is actually carrying out the work.0
