Carpet fitting question

I'm not sure if I've had the wool pulled over my eyes here. About 4 weeks ago I had a carpet fitted, it was freezing outside. There was a fold in the carpet that didn't lie flat after fitting. The carpet fitter said it was because the carpet and the house was cold and if it didn't flatten as it heated up, he would come back and correct it. It didn't flatten so I phoned him. I now can't get him to come back, he has made " tentative" arrangments twice but failed to turn up. I got the carpet through a large store and they organised the fitter so I'm hoping they will sort it out, but people I've spoken to said they have never heard of a carpet being too cold to lie flat. Have I been told porkies? Or is this a common occurance in winter. I have a picture in my mind of every house in Russia having wavy carpets!!!!

I'm no carpet fitting expert ... but .... ultimately, if the carpet shop organised the fitter, that makes it easier for you. The temperature is ( in my opinion ) irrelevant - if the carpet isn't laid properly, get on the phone to the shop and complain. Ignore this "temperature" thing, that's a red herring. The carpet wasn't laid satisfactorily, it's down to them to sort it out. You will no doubt get some bullsh*t about "our fitters are sub-contractors" ( which they often are ), but if you paid the shop to "supply and fit" then it's the shop's problem.
If you get no joy from the store manager, then Google the company and write to their head office - customer services or similar. Like I said, most carpet shops use freelance fitters, but that's not your problem if you paid them to "supply and fit". Your gripe is against the shop, and don't let them them pretend otherwise.0 -
I had a carpet fitted last year, and I was told that if I decide to lift the carpet when decorating in 10 years or so, it is important not to fold the carpet, as creases do not come out. It sounds like someone folded the carpet, and caused a crease, before it was fitted. Perhaps the fitter folded it, and knows he made a mistake.
You need to check if this information is correct, as I am no carpet expert, and if it is, then you need to get the carpet replaced. Contact the shop, tell them the problem, and state what you want i.e. a crease free carpet. Give them a couple of weeks, and if they refuse, inform them that you will take them to the small claims court to get your money back, as you will need to have a new carpet fitted.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
OP: Your situation happened to my neighbour recently. The carpet that was fitted had been left in the back of the van overnight and had quite literally frozen. (It was mid Jan).
When it was fitted, he had a crease appear after a few days. They came back and sorted it.0 -

Thanks folks for replying. Not sure about the situation with the contract. We bought the carpet from the shop, paid for it and they sent the fitter who brought the carpet and fitted it, but we had to pay the fitter seperately. I rang the shop yesterday, they contacted the fitter and then rang me back and said he had missed my calls??? He said he would come on Sat but I have to ring him to find out what time. This is exactly the same situation as before. When I ring him he then says he's in another part of the area and can't get here. I will give him one last chance and then I'm going into the shop to complain. I just needed to know if this cold weather thing was a genuine reason for the crease in the carpet. Seems it is, but no excuse not to correct it.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Arnt carpets Rolled up?0

Often see people folding up carpets to fit into their cars instead of having it rolled and delivered. As a carpet fitter of 35+years experience,I feel sorry for the fitter when he tries to lay it. Many,if not most, of todays carpets are just tufted like the old rubber-backed carpets and the backing is bulked up to give it a thicker, quality feel. I've had carpets that on a cold day are nearly impossible to unroll and when bending the back ,they just crack. The price nowadays of quality woven carpets is astronomical and the modern way of living is that they are replaced more often. The hardest thing nowadays with the coarse and solid backing is to unroll the carpet in the room,or hall etc without taking the wall paper off all the room corners.Thank goodness I'm retired, unfortunately still get invited for a meal or a drink with the add on," Oh,bring your carpet stretcher with you".0

Gastines, it was the carpet fitter who brought the carpet so if it was folded rather than rolled it was he who did it. I can't comment about the backing though.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0
