BT charging line rental for FO??

Is it right BT should be charging line rental for new fibre optic lines, when the customer is not even using the line for a landline telephone??? I was under the impression (and tbh Im sure BT told me this themselves a while back) that you did not need line rental for FO broadband?

Just got a letter offering "free upgrade" from BT but when rang they said FO is now enabled in my area but I still needed a line rental.

Is this a major scam or what pls?

Yes because even using internet you are using the copper wire and both copper and fibre need some maintenance and cost associated with it. where you use phone or just internet it still uses there infrastructure

Before you call it a scam, perhaps you should have learned how FTTC works. It still uses a portion of the copper line network, so why should you use it for free?

If someone from BT told you that there is something called fibre only and you dont need to pay line rental they were wrong, or you have misunderstood what they said., kinda think you are mixing up VM and BT,only Virgin promote anything as no line rental read,..although it's true that a link from the FTTC cabinet to your house would deliver broadband without dial tone, BT don't sell it, or wholesale it to others to sell, there are some telco's that do sub loop unbundling , but these are few and far between, also as FTTC uses part of the copper line, Openreach are still entitled to rent on that part of their network

Not to mention the fibre from the exchange to the local cabinet and the maintenance and power used by that too.

If the ISP paid those charges the broadband would cost more. If nobody paid them you'd need to enlist the aid of Harry Potter to get your kit connected to your ISP because Openreach are not a registered charity.
